HURON — Philip A. Maher, 92, of Huron, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2019, at Huron Regional Medical Center. His Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 21, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with military honors by the Huron Veterans Council. Burial will follow at St. Martins Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 5 to 7 p.m. today with a scripture prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home, or visitation one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church.
Philip was born on June 25, 1926, in Maywood, Ill. to Lincoln and Freda (Larson) Maher. Philip, along with his parents and three brothers, Lincoln, Jr. and twin brothers, Robert and Edward, moved to Chicago where they lived and received their public education. After high school, Philip enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944, and spent most of his enlistment in the Philippines. After his honorable discharge in 1946, Philip returned to Chicago and attended DePaul University for one year.
In 1952, Philip began a 31 year career with Armour and Company as a livestock buyer. On August 28, 1954, Philip was united in marriage to Bette L. LaMotte in Chicago. They lived in Green Bay, Wisc., Springfield, Mo., and East St. Louis, Mo. until he was transferred to Huron in 1969 with Armour’s. They had three children, Patricia, Karen, and Philip, Jr. Bette passed away in 1971, and in 1976 Philip was united in marriage to Alvina Timm. Philip was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish and Duplicate Bridge Club. Philip and Alvina enjoyed spending winters in Ariz. playing golf and bridge.
Philip is survived by his wife, Alvina Maher of Huron, three children, Karen (Jeff) Goldade of Coppell, Texas, Patricia (Bob) Seonella of St. Paul, Minn., and Philip, Jr. (Chris) Maher of Cudahy, Wisc.; stepchildren, Rod Timm of Huron, Donna (William) Nelson of Huron, Mark (Pamela) Timm of San Tan Valley, Ariz., and Tamara Timm of Tempe, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Cameron, Brent, Kris, Ronnie, Christian, and Mattie; five stepgrandchildren, Jamie, Danielle, Tully, Torria, and Colton; four great-grandchildren; and special friends, Bob Houge, Darrel DeKraai, and Ron West.
Philip was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Bette, and three brothers.
