School Board gears up for first day

HURON — The first day of school is right around the corner for the Huron School District.
“This is a quiet time in the district as we prepare for the year that is coming up and so the main thing I want to do is take a moment and offer some thank yous,” Superintendent Terry Nebelsick said.
Nebelsick complimented the improvements made to the Instructional Planning Center and the efforts that went into this from all of the administrators, the custodians, Rex Sawvell, Shelly Nelson, and the technical team.
Business Manager, Kelly Christopherson gave an update on the year’s budget so far, and looking ahead to student count day, which will take place on Sept. 29 to determine the amount of State Aid the school district will receive.

“We budgeted for 2,680 students which represents $5,482 of State Aid for each student,” Christopherson said.
He went on to discuss the plan should the numbers fall short on count day. “My plan is to transfer the $300,000 from the Capitol Outlay Fund to the General Fund as it is budgeted.”
Christopherson also mentioned the Surplus Auction, which was held on July 13 at the school’s transportation department, which raised $8,700 that was deposited into the general fund.
In the Superintendent’s report, Nebelsick invited board members and administrators who attended the Association of School Boards of South Dakota and School Administrators of South Dakota conference that took place Aug. 10 and 11, to make comments of their experiences. Shelly Siemonsma, Garrett Bischoff, David Wheeler and Craig Lee all commented on the areas they found to be enjoyable and beneficial at the conference.
The board also approved district pick-up points between Iroquois and Wolsey-Wessington schools, 20 new hires, seven contracts and seven resignations for the Huron School District.
The next board meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m., on Monday, Aug. 28, in the Instructional Planning Center.
