Slumberland’s Home for the Holidays

HURON – Just in time for the holidays, 11 families most in need in Huron have a great deal more to celebrate after becoming the latest recipients of mattress sets from Slumberland.
The company’s Home for the Holidays program started in 1993. Through it and its 40 Winks Foundation, Slumberland partners with local charities to identify and help families with no, or not enough, beds at home.
“It’s something that we feel very passionate about,” said Rich Bragg, owner of Slumberland in Huron. “Sleep is something that matters a lot to us here at Slumberland. Getting a good night’s sleep is so important to life in general.”
Members of the 11 families were on hand at Slumberland on Thursday as the 11 complete mattress sets were distributed to the recipients. Volunteers from Holy Trinity Catholic Church and other community members were on hand to deliver them to those who needed assistance with that.
In the 12 states that Slumberland serves, more than 2,000 new beds are given away each year, Bragg said. Since 1993, the company has donated more than 25,000 new beds to those who might otherwise be sleeping on the floor, he said.
Locally, it’s Slumberland of Huron’s 13th year with the program. The 11 complete mattress sets included brand new twin and full size Sealy and Tempurpedic mattresses and foundations plus metal bed frames and advanced mattress protectors, with a total value of $8,000.
Since becoming a part of the Huron community, Slumberland has donated more than $70,000 in brand new bedding and accessories.

“This is an area that we feel we can have an impact in the community,” Bragg said.
Over the years, the Huron program has grown to include partners. Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Women once again donated quilts and bedding for each mattress, and American Lutheran Church donated pillows.
Executive Director Rhonda Kludt and her team at United Way Heartland Region helps Slumberland find families who are most in need of the beds, Bragg said.
Agencies receiving beds this year are Helping Hands, Community Counseling Services, Huron Area Center for Independence, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Beadle County Drug Court, Huron School District, the American Lutheran Church and Head Start.
Bragg said Slumberland employees look forward to this time of year and are excited to once again deliver beds to those people who need them in Huron.
“We’re extremely thankful for United Way and for all of our partners,” he said.
