HURON — A total of 35 educators, representing several school districts and coming from as far away as Minnesota were recognized Wednesday afternoon at the Huron Community Campus Fine Arts Center theater.
The group, all of whom are certified teachers, took the next step on their own respective educational pathway, when they were recognized for earning a Masters Degree in Teaching and Learning.
The graduation ceremony took place at the Fine Arts Center on the Huron Community Campus, and culminated two years of study by the graduates through the program at HCC.
It also satisfied a dream of Doug Pietz, the executive director of the Huron Community Campus.
“One of the things that I said when I interviews for this position,” Pietz told the graduates, family and friends in attendance, “was that I really wanted to have a graduation ceremony back on the campus. While today is not really a commencement, it certainly checks this box on my to-do list.”
The group on Wednesday represented seven different school districts, and each spent one weekend per month on the Huron Community Campus to earn his or her Master’s degree. The program participants met in Huron, while earning the degree beneath the umbrella of Northern State University in Aberdeen, which oversees the academics at the Huron site. Several representatives from NSU were in attendance at Wednesday’s recognition event as well.
