PIERRE — The numbers released by the South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) on Monday indicated a notable spike and continuing trend of increasing cases among K-12 schools, while numbers with the state’s colleges and universities have continued a steep trend downward.
The week ending Sept. 19 saw 261 cases reported to the DOH in K-12 schools, which brings the overall total so far this school year to 963 positive cases statewide. To this point, 678 of those cases have recovered, which means 285 remain active cases.
The 963 total positive cases in K-12 schools in the state have been distributed as 674 students and 289 staff.
Among active cases in K-12 schools, 122 schools report 1-2 active cases among students and staff, while 28 report three or more active cases.
For the fourth straight week, the numbers for S.D. colleges, universities, and technical colleges drastically dropped, from 162 new positive cases the previous week to 85 new positive COVID-19 cases the week ending September 19.
Those 85 new cases brings the overall positive case total among colleges to 1,172, with 1,115 of those cases among students and 57 among staff. Most of those cases have now recovered, with 1,043 recovered cases leaving 129 active virus cases at the state’s institutes of higher learning.
Among those active cases, two colleges report 1-2 active cases among their students and staff. Out of the state’s 15 accredited colleges, universities, and technical colleges, 10 report having three or more active cases.
