Area golfers to close season at state tournaments

HURON — Several area golfers will be looking to finish strong during the Class B State Girls’ Golf Tournament, which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings.

After finishing second in the state tournament last season, freshman Brynn Roehrich of Clark/Willow Lake will be looking to be in the hunt once again for a state championship.

Miller teammates Jayce Pugh and Kaihlyn Anderberg shared the third spot at the end of last year’s event.

Pugh, who is now a sophomore, was the Class B individual champion for the Rustlers in 2021 and finished as the Class B co-champion in 2022. Anderberg is also a sophomore.

Aslo qualifying for the state tournament this year for Clark/Willow Lake are senior Jalen Hohm, freshman Mallory Nelson and eighth-grader Peyton Lee. Hohm shared the 61st spot in last year’s tournament, while Nelson finished tied for 76th.

Joining Pugh and Anderberg at this year’s tournament for Miller will be sophomore Sydney Asmuss and eighth-grader Bailey Brueggeman, who are both making their first appearance in the state tournament.

Highmore-Harrold senior Kendall Cermak will close her high school golf career with a return trip to the state tournament. She finished tied for 47th last season.

Doland freshman Olivia Knox will be making a return trip to the state tournament. She finished in a tie for spot No. 56 last year.

De Smet sophomores Harper Anderson and Brooke Jennings are returing to the state tournament. Anderson finished tied for spot No. 83 last season.

Also qualifying for her first state tournament this season was sophomore Belle Niederbaumer of James Valley Christian.

Chester is the defending Class B girls’ champion. Miller was third a year ago, while Clark/Willow Lake was eighth.

Class B boys
With four golfers who finished in the top half of the frield during last year’s state tournament, Wessington Springs will be looking to challenge for a top spot at the Class B Boys’ Golf State Tournament, which will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Brookings Country Club.

Seniors Blake Larson and Brock Krueger will lead the Spartans into the 36-hole event. Larson finished fourth in the 130-golfer field a year ago, while Krueger finished tied for 52nd.

Also returning to the state tournament for Wessington Springs are JD Thompson, who finished tied for 33rd, and Luke Larson, who tied for spot No. 58.

De Smet and Miller will also be sending four golfers each to the state tournament.

Senior Tom Aughenbaugh finished tied for 41st last season for De Smet. He will be joined by senior Kadyn Fast and sophomores Max Kees and Danny Sudenga.

Sophomore Derek Brueggeman shared spot No. 52 last season for Miller. He will be joined this season byJorryn Heilman, sophomore Oliver Fritzsche and freshman Luke Nordeh.

Eighth-grader Kaden Wookey of Clark/Willow Lake returns to the state tournament after sharing the 39th spot last season. He will be joined by eighth-grader Cade Gaikowski.

Kaden Weinreis shared spot No. 44 last season for Doland. He will be joined by freshman teammate Briggs LaBrie at this year’s event.

Other area golfers qualifying for this year’s event are senior Ethan Bartholow of James Valley Christian and junior Ethan Schmiedt of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket.

Gregory is the defending Class B champion, while Wessington Springs was eighth a year ago.

Class A girls
Junior Addisyn Evans of Redfield is the lone area golf qualified to compete in the Class A State Girls’ Golf Tournament, which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Bakker Crossing Golf Course in Sioux Falls.

Evans will be making her first trip to the state tournament for the Pheasants.

Sioux Falls Christian is the defending Class A champion. Vermillion was second a year ago, followed by St. Thomas More.
