City recognizes National Fire Prevention Week

Posted

HURON — As the first official business of Monday’s Huron City Commission meeting, Mayor Mark Robish called Huron Fire Chief Ron Hines to the front of the room to present him with a proclamation declaring that Oct. 6-12 is National Fire Prevention Week.

Hines then explained the facets of the fire department in Huron and nearby neighborhoods, with both paid staff and volunteer positions within the city and rural departments. He also explained that over Fire Prevention Week, fire department employees will visit second grade classrooms at James Valley Christian, Holy Trinity, and then at Madison 2-3 Center.

The commission approved a payment request to North Star Logistics LLC for the transfer station project in the amount of $388,569.30. “It’s starting to look like a real building,” assistant city engineer Dennis Bennet joked.

Commissioner Rich Bragg and Finance Director Paullyn Carey explained a request to enter an agreement with the Department of Transportation Office of Air, Rail, and Transit for the next phase of the taxiway extension at the airport. This project will move forward when federal funds are available, with the city paying five percent of the total cost.

The commission also approved the request to bid for propane fuel supply and set the bid opening for 2 p.m. on October 22.

Bragg announced the solid waste holiday hours for the upcoming Native American Day holiday on Monday, October 14. Monday’s garbage, recycling, and yard waste pickup will be done on Wednesday.

Mayor Robish reminded residents that city offices will also be closed on Native American Day.

The public meeting adjourned to two executive sessions on negotiations and personnel and the commission completed the evening with a work session regarding the upcoming land auction of city property.
