County approves construction of future hunting lodge

Posted

HURON — The Beadle County Commission approved a conditional use permit filed by James Lake to construct four 1,100 square foot cabins for use as a hunting lodge on property at Lake Byron.

The land previously was home to another business, and storage units from the previous business will be retained, but the previous business will be razed and ground level brought up to avoid future flooding issues on the property.

The meeting opened with Highway Superintendent Jason Fritzsche noting the work of the department. He noted that mowing of road ditches is a major project at the moment with the weather leading to significant growth in county road ditches.

Fritzsche presented two pay requests for structures that are under construction. Those were approved. He also noted that he is holding interviews for an open position and hopes to have someone in place by the end of the month.

Sheriff Doug Solem discussed a new hire in the jail and a new deputy who transferred from the jail, wanting to clarify the pay grades for the new deputy. Commissioners also questioned Solem about his proposed 2025 budget that has been submitted.

Taylor Jans, the Beadle County Veterans Service Officer (VSO), met with the commission to discuss his role and the people who utilize VSO services within the county.

The commission then had an extended conversation with auditor Jill Hanson regarding the 2025 provisional budget. A special meeting was set for July 23 with department heads, beginning at 9 a.m., to evaluate the budget.

The next regular commission meeting will be July 30 at 9 a.m. in the commission room on the second floor of the courthouse.
