Heartland schools prepare for Class B meet

SIOUX FALLS — The Hearland region will be well-represented at the South Dakota Class B State Track Meet, beginning Thursday at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

The De Smet Bulldog boys will bring three relay teams (4x100, 4x200, medley) and eight individual competitors to Sioux Falls.

Ganon Henrich qualified in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter sprints for De Smet. Melville Deloye and George Jensen both qualified in the high jump and triple jump while Grant Wilkinson qualified in the shot put and discus.

Tom Aughenbaugh also qualified in the triple jump, with Kadyn Fast (long jump), Samuel Gigov (discus), and Trace VanRegenmorter (shot put) also qualifying in individual events.

The Bulldog girls have the 4x400 meter and 4x800 meter relays headed to state.

Three girls qualified in multiple individual events, with Hazel Luethmers qualifying in the 200-meter dash and high jump, Charli McCune in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles, and Ivey Schoenfelder making it in the shot put and discus. Mirra Beck qualified in the 300-meter hurdles and Adalyn Gross made it in the 400-meter dash.

Highmore-Harrold girls have one girl qualified, but Autumn Fallis has qualified in the 800-meter run, 1600-meter run, 3200-meter run, and the 300-meter hurdles. The Pirate boys’ team will bring the 4x800 relay and two individual qualifiers as Aitor Ortega also qualified for four events - the 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, high jump, and long jump. Brooks McPeak made the meet in the 3200-meter run.

The Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots will bring six individuals and one relay between the boys’ and girls’ teams. The boys qualified the 4x200 relay team. Erik Salmen reached state in shot put, javelin, and discus. Payton Chasing Hawk made it in the 400-meter dash and the 300-meter hurdles. Brendan Nowell will participate in the long jump.

On the girls’ side, Emmerie Arthurs qualified in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, Emma Schneider made it in the long jump and triple jump, and Isabel Gilbert qualified in the 400-meter dash.

Iroquois/Lake Preston qualified two individual girls and one relay. Adison Moore will participate in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter while Hadlee Holt will toss the shot put and discus. The Sharks also qualified the girls’ 4x100 meter relay. Shark boys attending the meet will be Josh McMasters (high jump) and Rexton Blue (discus).

James Valley Christian has a number of athletes qualified. Dax Frandsen (400-meter, 800-meter) is the only Viking boy that qualified in two individual events.

The team is bringing four relays - the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, and medley. Tayne Herrmann will participate in the 110-meter hurdles, Isaac Korell in the discus, Kaden Ober in the 3200-meter run, and Gavin Waldner and Isaac Wipf in the long jump.

The Vikings’ girls team qualified the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, and medley relay teams. Maggie Decker (shot put, discus), Andee Frandsen (100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles), Lainey Goertz (100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles), and Hadasah Olson (1600-meter, 3200-meter) will each participate in multiple individual events. Daril Frandsen (800-meter), Alexa Goertz (100-meter hurdles), Nave Gross (400-meter), Natalie Hamilton (discus), Rhayonna Hood (triple jump), Lily Swanson (3200-meter), and Jacey Wipf (1600-meter) will each represent JVC.

Sunshine Bible Academy’s relay teams will highlight their participation at the state meet. The boys’ 4x400, 4x800, and medley relay teams qualified while the girls’ 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, and medley teams each made the cut. Jimmy Burma qualified in the boys’ 3200-meter run, while Betra Amare qualified in the girls’ 800-meter run.

Wessington Springs has six relays and seven individuals participating in the meet. The boys’ 4x400, 4x800, and medley relays each qualified and the same relays qualified for the girls.

Brock Krueger (high jump, triple jump) and Karter Mebius (400-meter, 800-meter) each qualified for multiple events for the Spartan boys while Ryder Michalek qualified in the high jump. Anna Arhart (shot put), Abby Kolousek (3200-meter), Kenzie Kolousek (400-meter), and Avery Orth (shot put) will represent the girls’ team in individual events.

The Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds girls’ team put all five relays into the state meet, with the boys qualifying the 4x100, 4x400, and medley relay teams. The girls have three participants in multiple individual events, with Samara Clemente competing in the high jump and triple jump, Payton Kemnitz in the 800-meter and 1600-meter, and Tatum Luce in the high jump and pole vault each qualifying in two events. Kailynn Dorris (javelin), Timber Haeder (pole vault), and Kendal Uttecht (800-meter) also qualified.

Colin Hughes is the lone Warbird boy to make the meet in two events, shot put and discus. Jackson Carter (pole vault), Moshe Richmond (high jump), Grant Timm (javelin), and Carson Walters (pole vault) qualified in individual events.

The state meet will begin Thursday and conclude Saturday.
