Huron boys take second in Madison

MADISON — The Huron Tiger boys’ cross country team, with three finishers in the top 10, grabbed second place at the John Collignon cross country meet, held at Madison Country Club.

“The kids ran their best today,” said HHS head coach Angie Thomas. “We’ve had a tough week of workouts in the heat and the kids finished their first full week of school, so I’m proud of the effort they showed today.”

The Brookings Bobcats took the boys’ team title, scoring 13 points, as Bobcat runners Samuel Conrad, Ernest Ting and Jacob York finished 1-2-3, within 20 seconds of each other. Conrad’s winning time over the 5K layout was 17:40.76

Huron ended with 30 points, led by Cheech Harmon, who’s time of 18:11.39 placed him fourth in the field. TJ Lien surged down the stretch to earn sixth place and Angel Olivo Porcayo earned an eighth-place finish. Cameron Cutshaw was the final Huron scorer, in 20th place.

Host Madison finished third in the field, with 43 points.

The girls’ team title came down to a two-team race, with Sioux Valley edging Brookings 20-24 to take the win. Huron was third with 42 points.

Individually, Sioux Valley’s Isabelle Bloker turned in a medalist time of 20:02.41, more than two minutes ahead of runner up Madison Kepner of Brookings. Kepner’s Bobcat teammate Addie Smetana finished third.

Huron was led by Josie Vlieger, who earned a fifth-place finish in the tightly bunched group. Teammate Tori Buffington finished ninth, Lily Meyer was 12 and Tatum Peterson rounded out the Huron scorers with a 16th place finish.

JV Meet
Huron’s boys’ finished second in the JV competition at the meet, while no school fielded a full team in the girls’ race.

Shane Harming was medalist for Brookings, leading the JV Bobcats to the top of the team standings with 10 points. Huron was second with 42 points.

For the Tigers, Alec Pester was eighth and James Weir was ninth in the field. Angelo Medina finished 12th, one spot ahead of Edvin Rodriguez Reyes.

Huron had two finishers in the girls’ JV race, led by medalist Ellie Puterbaugh, who broke the tape more than a minute ahead of Kennedy Nemitz of Brookings. Teammate Kayeleigh Bowden finished 11th for the Tigers.


Middle School
Both Huron middle school teams finished fourth on the day. Brookings topped the boys’ field with 14 points, followed by Sioux Valley, Madison and the Tigers. Trevin Lounsbury of Brookings took medalist honors as the Bobcats placed all four runners in the top six.

Huron was led by Henry Kruze in 11th place, while Ira Sarvis and Emerson Sarvis finished 16th, and 17th, respectively, and Maxwell Radke took 21st.

Sioux Valley totaled 23 points to top the girls’ middle schoolers, followed by Brookings, Madison and then Huron.

Maci Licht of Sioux Valley was medalist. Huron scoring runners included Kinsley Armstrong in 12th place, Ramsey Rozell in 13th, Nora Pester in 15th and Cora Wilk in 20th.

Huron will be back in action on Friday at the Augustana Twilight XC meet, then will return to Huron to run in the Andy’s Road Race on Saturday.
