Huron teeners open season against Sioux Falls

HURON — The Huron 13/14u team opened its season on Wednesday with a doubleheader against the Sioux Falls Post 15 13/14u club and came away with a victory and a tie at Klock Field.

In the opener, the home team rallied from an early deficit to score nine runs in the bottom of the third inning and came away with a 10-7 victory despite eight errors committed by Huron.

The errors figured into pitching lines as Parker Bischoff opened the game on the mound and went five innings, allowing five runs, but all of them unearned. Bischoff struck out 10 batters while allowing two hits and four walks. He was relieved by Colt Culver, who pitched a hitless inning of relief, allowing one run on two walks and a strikeout.

Huron put 13 runners on base, with eight hits and five walks. Jackson Ford led the way with a double and a pair of singles. Colin Hogle also reached base three times with a single and a pair of walks.

Noah Koops had a double and a walk as the only other Tiger to reach base twice.

Big innings were the order of the day in the nightcap, as Post 15 opened the game with a six-run first inning, only to have Huron answer with four in the bottom of the first. Huron would then pile on six in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take a 10-6 lead, but Post 15 responded with a 7-run inning to make it 13-10. The Tigers added two in the bottom of the third and then after Post 15 added a run in the top of the fourth, the Tigers had a chance to walk off the game, but had a runner picked off on the basepaths for the third out of the inning, and the game was called a tie at that point due to game length with the teams knotted at 14-14.

Koops started the game on the mound for Huron, but he only made it through two outs in the first inning, allowing five runs on a hit, three walks, and a hit batsman. He also struck out two. Jimmie Martin came in relief and finished the game, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks, striking out seven.

After being silent on the basepaths in the first game, each team stole seven bases in the nightcap. Huron utilized 13 walks issued by Post 15 pitchers to generate offense, as they had just five hits as a team.

Jayden Ryman was on base all four times at bat, with a single, three walks, and a stolen base. Koops was perfect in three trips to the plate, with a single and a pair of walks. Nate Gray reached base three times without a hit, getting hit by pitch and also walking twice.

Wessyn Brueggman and Ernest Wallette each walked twice. Quincey Rashaad had a single and a walk and added two stolen bases as well from the leadoff spot. Josh Gilbert had a pair of steals and Sean Janes added a stolen base.

Jimmie Martin had the sole extra-base hit for Huron with a double and added a stolen base.

Huron will take a 1-0-1 record to a weekend tourney in Watertown beginning on Saturday.
