To the Editor:

National 4-H Week is October 7-12 and I am a 9- year member of the Heartland 4-Hers. I have developed so many valuable life skills through being in 4-H. My favorite area is Community Service. In becoming a responsible young adult, I believe that we have so much to offer to our community. I love helping others and I know that every time I help, I’m making a difference in someone’s life. I believe that members and leaders of 4-H made me who I am today.

Growing up, my mom believed it necessary to expose me to public speaking and different groups and organizations. I was a shy child, and I know, without a doubt, that 4-H changed who I am today by giving me a voice. It taught me not only to help others, but to help others out of the love and compassion of my heart. 4-H changed the way I think about community service.

Many people may think of doing community service out of obligation or to make themselves look better, but what I’ve found is that nothing can compare to the look on people’s faces when they realize that they don’t have to worry about buying food for the week because they’ve been brought a Thanksgiving dinner. Even little things like making tray favors for Meals on Wheels recipients.

These things make me love community service and they make me love our community even more. I am proud to be a leader in my 4-H clubs. I am vice president my club and the 4-H council’s treasurer. Leadership roles help me realize how much work goes into being an active member of our community. Beadle County Extension office can provide addition information and help you find the perfect club for you.
