Mayor recognizes area Hall of Fame inductees

Posted

HURON — During public forum at Monday’s Huron City Commission meeting, Mayor Mark Robish made a point to acknowledge and recognize five individuals who were recognized at this past weekend’s South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

Jay Ellwein, Brian Shanks, and Denny Busch were all honored for their time as Huron prepsters. JoEllen (Hofer) Salmen was mentioned for her high school play at Hitchcock, and Huron resident Tom McFarlane was recognized as part of the 1978 Armour Packers team that was recognized as the organization’s team of excellence this year.

Robish also read a proclamation declaring September as the National Senior Center Month in Huron and recognized this year’s theme of “Powered by Connection.”

The commission considered two variances during the meeting.

The first was filed by Megan Mammenga with Lux Med Spa, 304 Kansas Ave. SE, to allow for microblading at her studio. This was approved.

The second variance caused more conversation, though not directly in regard to the applicant. Denise Peterson, 1540 Old Highway 14, applied for a variance and conditional use permit to remove the existing home on the property and replace it with a mobile home in an area not zoned for mobile home units. The second part of the request included utilizing the property for camping spaces, and while the variance was approved, the commission held discussion regarding the need for more clear regulations within Huron regarding camping facilities on private property.

City planner Barry Cranston reminded the commission that an ordinance was proposed to attempt to do that a few years back, but it did not pass the commission. Commissioners approved Peterson’s variance and conditional use permit, but also spoke to the need to have further conversation on campsite regulations.

Commissioners also:
• Set Sept. 9 as the public hearing date to consider a retail on-off sale malt beverage and South Dakota farm wine license for Crossroads Hotel.
• Approved a special event on-sale alcoholic beverage license filed by Scoreboard Bar and Grill for Sept. 21.
• Approved a raffle for a Crafting Out Cancer Event hosted by Debbie Vaughn on Oct. 5 at the Huron Event Center.
• Appointed Linda Skorheim as interim Deputy Finance Director.

• Reclassified part-time seasonal employment of Kaleb Ferguson from ballfield maintenance to park maintenance.
• Reclassified part-time seasonal employment of Levi Preston from Central Park maintenance to park maintenance.
• Accepted the voluntary resignation of Rhonda Yates as part-time year-round library clerk and approved advertising for the position.
• Approved Resolution 2024-09 to reappoint Paullyn Carey to the South Dakota Public Assurance Alliance board.

The commission then met in executive session for a personnel and a contractual item. They then concluded the evening with a work sesson on the 2025 budget.
