Moo, Poe reach semis for Tigers at state

RAPID CITY — Huron has a pair of players playing for third place after the opening day of the Class A State Boys’ Tennis Tournament on Monday.

Dah Christ Moo in first flight singles and Say Poe in fifth flight singles advanced to the semifinals for the Tigers before suffering their first loss.

After opening the tournament with a bye, third-seeded Moo used set scores of 7-6 (4) and 6-0 to get past sixth-seeded Joe Schulte of Milbank in the quarterfinals. Second-seeded Jack Hancock of Rapid City Christian defeated Dah 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals

“Dah battled back down 2-5 to win in a tiebreaker and then played a very tough match against Rapid City Christian in the semis coming up just short,” Huron coach Tim Hedblom said. “I’m very proud of how he played today.”

Poe, who is the fourth seed in the fifth flight, used set scores of 6-1 and 7-5 to defeat fifth-seeded Jayden Reecy of Aberdeen Roncalli in the quarterfinals. Top-seeded Logan Boyle of Sioux Falls Christian got past Poe 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals.

The other four singles players for Huron will start play in the fifth-place semifinals today.

Matthew Thin, who was the sixth-seed for the Tigers in second flight singles, opened the tournament with back-to-back 6-3 wins against No. 11 Leo Isburg of Spearfish. He was then defeated 6-3 and 6-1 by third-seeded Palmer Johnson of Aberdeen Roncalli in the quarterfinals.

Thin will face seventh-seeded Andrew Levine of St. Thomas More in his opening match today.

Lah Doh Soe was also seeded sixth for Huron in third flight singles. He opened with back-to-back 6-1 wins against Austin O’Bryan of Spearfish, before being edged 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 10-8 by Gannon May of Aberdeen Roncalli in the quarterfinals.

Soe will face seventh-seeded Braeden Strain of St. Thomas More in his opening match today.

As the fourth seed in fourth flight singles Hser Wah received a bye in the opening round. He was edged 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 by fifth-seeded Weston Northrup of Pierre in the quarterfinals.
Wah will face ninth-seeded Ethan Sims of Madison in his first match today.

Maner Htoo also received a bye in the opening round as the fourth seed in sixth flight singles for Huron. He suffered back-to-back 6-1 losses to fifth-seeded Oliver Huxford of St. Thomas More in the quaterfinals.

Htoo will play eighth-seeded Alex Baugh in his opening match today.

“Lah Doh and Hser each lost in third-set tiebreakers,” Hedblome said. “I’m very pleased with how both of them played today.

“Say Poe and Dah are both playing for third,” he said. “We need to come out and play hard again tomorrow.”

In doubles play, Huron’s No. 3 team of Thin and Poe will play for third place today.

As the fourth seed, Thin and Poe received a bye in the opening round and then defeated fifth-seeded Aberdeen Roncalli 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 to advance to the semifinals.

Top-seed Sioux Falls Christian derailed the championship bid for Thin and Poe with 6-4 and 6-2 set wins in the semifinals.

The Huron duo will face third-seeded Rapid City Christian for third-place today.

The other two doubles teams for the Tigers will play for fifth place today.

Fifth-seeded Moo and Htoo opening with a bye at No. 1 doubles, before being defeated 6-2 and 6-3 by fourth-seeded Aberdeen Roncalli in the quarterfinals.

Moo and Htoo rebounded with a 10-8 win against eighth-seeded Milbank in the fifth-place semifinals. They will face seventh-seeded Madison for fifth place today.

Soe and Wah were the seventh seed for the Tigers in No. 2 doubles. They used a 6-0 and 6-1 victory to get past No. 10-seeded St. Thomas More in the opening round.

Second-seeded Rapid City Christian handed Soe and Wah a 6-4 and 6-0 loss in the quarter finals. Soe and Wah rebounded with a 10-5 win against sixth-seeded Milbank in the fifth-place semifinals.

Soe and Wah will face fifth-seeded Lennox of fifth place today.

After the opening day of competition, Sioux Falls Christian held a slim lead over Rapid City Christian for the top spot.
Aberdeen Roncalli was a distant third, followed by Huron and Lennox to round out the top five in the 11-team event.
