O'Gorman caps perfect season with Class AA title

SIOUX FALLS — O’Gorman capped a perfect season with its second Class AA state championship in the past three seasons.

The top-seeded Knights defeated third-seeded Brandon Valley 55-42 on Saturday in the title game of the Class AA State Girls’ Basketball Tournament at the Pentagon. They finished the season with an unblemished record of 24-0.

It is the fourth overall title for O’Gorman. It won AA championships in 1995, 2017 and 2022.

Sydney Terveen had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Knights, while Mahli Abdouch had 16 points and six assists.
Terveen and Julia Eggert each had four steals for O’Gorman.
Lucy Moore and Abdouch were named to the all-tournament team for the Knights.

Brandon Valley was led by Ava Kellenberger with 14 points, while Alyvia Padgett also reached double figures with 10 points.

Gracie Salter pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for the Lynx, who ended the season at 19-5. Kennedi Deckert and Padgett each had three assists, while Reese Condon had three steals.

Geiver and Padgett were named to the all-tournament team for Brandon Valley.

Third place

Sioux Falls Jefferson 44, Harrisburg 40
Sioux Falls Jefferson escaped with a 44-40 victory against Harrisburg in the third-place game of the Class AA State Tournament on Saturday at the Pentagon.

The Cavaliers held a 29-27 lead heading into the final quarter.

Brinley Altenburg scored a game-high 23 points to lead Jefferson, which improved to 18-6. Jaidyn Dunn and Abby Horner added eight and seven points, respectively.

Dunn had eight rebounds for the Cavaliers. Ashlen Johnson had four assists and Horner had three steals.

Altenburg and Dunn were named to the all-tournament team for Jefferson

Abigail Flanagan led Harrisburg with 15 points and seven rebounds. Jaylee Hofer also reached double figures with 15 points.

Flanagan and Sadie Mehrman each had three assists for the Tigers, who ended the season at 14-10. Flanagan and Makinley Lawrenson each had three steals.

Hofer and Flanagan were named to the all-tournament team for Harrisburg.

Fifth place

Pierre 48, Mitchell 47
Lennix Dupris converted on 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch to help Pierre escape with a 48-47 victory against Mitchell in the consolation championship game of the Class AA State Tournament on Saturday at the Pentagon.

The Governors, who improved to 17-7 led 20-18 at the half, but Mitchell carried a 34-33 advantage into the final quarter.

Ryann Barry had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead Pierre. Dupris finished with 14 points, while Reese Terwilliger added eight points.

Gracelyn Taylor and Barry each had four steals for the Governors, while Taylor also had a team-high three assists.

Terwilliger and Dupris were named to the all-tournament team for Pierre

Addie Siemsen had 16 points to lead three players in double figures for Mitchell, which ends the season at 20-4. Sawyer Stoebner, who was the Spirit of Su winner in Class AA, had 12 points and Lauren VanOverschelde had 10 points.

Stoebner, who was the lone representative for Mitchell on the all-tournament team, also had team-highs with nine rebounds and seven assists. She also had four steals, along with Carsyn Weich.

Spearfish 59, Rapid City Stevens 50
Spearfish outscored Rapid City Stevens by seven points in the third quarter en route to a 59-50 victory in the seventh-place game of the Class AA State Tournament on Saturday at the Pentagon.

The Spartans, who improved to 16-8, led 26-19 at the half.
Maria Bouman was the led player to reach double figures for Spearfish with 14 points. Kate Scharf and Mya Kochuten each had nine points, while Sofie Guthmiller added eight points.

Scharf and Bouman each had four rebounds for the Spartans, while Jozie Dana had six assists and Bouman had six steals.

Taaliyah Porter led the way for Rapid City Stevens with 16 points. Jessa Griswold had 13 points, while Brittany Jones added nine points.

Isabell Higgins had eight rebounds for the Raiders, who finished the season at 13-11. Halle Petrson had three assists.

Porter was named to the all-tournament team for Rapid City Stevens.
