Post 7 comes up short at Gopher Classic

HOPKINS, Minn. — Huron Post 7 finished winless in five games during the Gopher Classic, which concluded Sunday.

Hopkins used a run in its final at-bat to edge Huron 6-5 on Friday.

The home team scored two runs in the opening inning for a 2-0 lead, which stood until the top of the fourth inning, when Post 7 put all five of its runs on the board.

Hopkins answered with three runs in its half of the fourth inning to even the score at 5-5.

Layne Wenzel had two of the five hits in the game for Huron.

Kolton Ogle highlighted the offensive effort for Post 7 with a grand slam in the fourth inning.

Also recording hits for Huron were Jackson Mattke and Bubba Peterson.

Jack Pedersen handled the pitching duties for Post 7. He allowed six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Also on Friday, The Grand Rapids Brewers handed Huron an 8-2 setback.

Post 7 scored runs in the first and seventh innings.

Trace Wenz and Ogle each had a pair of hits for Post 7. Wenz had the lone extra-base hit with a double.

Wenzel pitched the first three innings for Huron, allowing seven runs on 12 hits with a pair of strikeouts. Brady Feenstra pitched the final three innings, allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Legion Post 225 used a run in its final at-bat to get past Huron 5-4 in one of two games on Saturday.

Recording singles for Post 7 in the game were Wenz, Mattke, Peterson, Logan Leyendecker and Tanner Gilbert.

Pitching the first four innings for Huron was Gilbert, who allowed four runs on three hits with a strikeout and two walks. Tommie Martin pitched the final inning, allowing one run on a hit with a strikeout and two walks.

In the other game Saturday, Omah North Hauptman edged Huron 4-2.

Gilbert had a double to account for one of the five hits in the game for Post 7. Also recording hits were Mattke, Leyendecker, Pedersen and Ogle.

Leyendecker handled the pitching duties through four innings for Huron. He allowed two runs on five hits with a walk.

Peterson pitched the final inning, allow two runs on two hits with a strikeout.

In the final game on Sunday, Bemidji Centaurs used 15 hits to get past Huron 13-5.

Wenzel doubled to highlight the offensive effort for Post 7. Also recording hits were Pedersen, Ogle and Martin.

Martin pitched six innings for Huron, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Branden Flower went the final inning on the mound, allowing three runs on four hits with a pair of walks.

Post 7 will host Sioux Falls West in a 5 p.m., doubleheader on Wednesday at Memorial Park Stadium.
