Post 7 earns split in twinbill against Sioux Falls West

HURON — Behind six strong innings on the mound from Layne Wenzel, Huron Post 7 earned a 6-3 victory against Sioux Falls West in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday at Memorial Park Stadium.

Wenzel allowed just two runs, with one of those bing unearned, on four hits. He tallied nine strikeouts and had six walks.

Bubba Peterson pitched the final inning, allowing one run on one hit, with a pair of strikeouts.

After scoring a run in each of the first and third innings, Huron put two runs up in the fourth inning to build a 4-1 advantage.

Sioux Falls scored its second run in the top of the fifth inning, but Post 7 answered with two more in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-2.

Post 15 scored a run during its final at-bat in the seventh inning, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Logan Leyendecker had the lone extra-base hit for Huron with a double.

Kolton Ogle, Brady Feenstra and Tanner Gilbert each had a pair of hits to lead the 11-hit effort.

The victory allowed Post 7 to emerge with a split in the twinbill after Sioux Falls used an unearned run in the top of the seventh to pull out a 4-3 win in the opening game.

Jackson Mattke had a pair of hits for Huron in the first game.

Jack Pedersen turned in a complete-game performance on the mound for Post 7. He allowed four runs, with just one of those being earned, while striking out seven batters.

Huron will close the regular season with a doubleheader against Renner at noon Saturday at Memorial Park Stadium.
