SIOUX FALLS — Huron Post 7 Tigers had a tough first day at the Dakota Classic Tournament held in Sioux Falls this weekend.

Brandon Valley Post 131 walked off the Tigers 7-6 in eight innings in the opening game.

Post 7 struck first with six runs in the top of the second but struggled to push any more runs across the rest of the way as Post 131 chipped away, scoring runs in four different innings to tie the game after regulation, prompting an extra inning.

Post 131 put the first two hitters on base in the eighth inning with a single and an error on a fielder’s choice. A single then drove in the winning run for Brandon Valley.

Jack Pedersen took the hill to open the game for Huron, tossing five innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks, striking out five. Tommie Martin completed two innings of relief, allowing a run on two hits and three walks.

Martin was on base three times for Post 7 with three walks. Jackson Mattke had a single and a walk while Tanner Gilbert smacked a double.

In the second game, SOS Heating and Cooling of Omaha, Neb., jumped out with four runs in the first inning and continued to add on, eventually defeating Post 7 by the score of 11-3.

Layne Wenzel opened the game on the mound for Huron, pitching four innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks, striking out six. Gilbert took over at that point, pitching the final two innings, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk.

Gilbert was the lone Huron hitter to reach base twice, with a pair of singles. Trace Wenz and Brady Feenstra each stole a base.

Huron (3-10) will play St. Michael at 1 p.m. today.
