Post 7 picks up first win

RAPID CITY — Huron Post 7 baseball picked up its first win of the season Thursday evening as part of the Veterans Classic tournament in Rapid City.

The Tigers are playing in the pool at Fitzgerald Stadium, the home of the Rapid City Post 22 team.

Behind a big game at the plate for Trace Wenz and excellent pitching from Layne Wenzel, Post 7 won 12-0 on Thursday over Miles City, Mont.

Wenzel stifled the Miles City Outlaw hitters, allowing just four total baserunners over five shutout innings, striking out four.

The Huron offense put 19 runners on base, led by a three-hit game from Wenz that included a double, two singles, and a stolen base. He also drove in six of the 12 runs for Post 7.

Jackson Mattke also reached base three times, with a single, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. He also swiped a base. Kolton Ogle smacked a double.

Tanner Gilbert, Logan Leyendecker, and Jack Pedersen each reached base twice on a single and a walk. Bubba Peterson, Wenzel, and Tommie Martin each had a walk and were hit by pitch in the victory.

Friday’s games were not as kind to Post 7, as the Tigers dropped a pair of games to Cheyenne, Wyo., and Alliance, Neb.

After a diverse offensive performance in the tourney opener Thursday, Post 7 struggled to put together hits against Cheyenne Post 6 hurler Hayden Swaen who tossed five innings of shutout ball before giving over to the bullpen.

Pedersen led five pitchers to the mound for Post 7, tossing 1 2/3 innings of perfect baseball with a strikeout before giving way to Martin, who allowed a pair of runs over 1 1/3 innings on a hit and two walks. Gilbert allowed two unearned runs in an inning of relief, striking out one, and Leyendecker pitched a hitless inning of relief, allowing two walks and striking out one. Brady Feenstra got the final out, but not before allowing four additional runs on three hits and two walks.

Post 7’s offense struggled to just two hits in the game. Pedersen was able to draw three walks in the game.

While Post 7 lost the second game of the day to the Alliance-based Peltz County Spartans team, the game showed a lot of resilience for the Tigers.

The Spartans jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first half-inning of play, seemingly dooming Post 7 to a big loss in their second game of the day. However, Huron put up seven runs in the third inning and five in the fourth to tie the game 12-12. Peltz County was able to get four more runs in the fifth inning and a pair more in the seventh inning for the 18-12 victory.

Peterson opened the game on the mound for Post 7, going four innings, allowing 12 runs (five earned) on six hits and six walks, striking out seven. Gilbert followed with three innings of relief, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks.

The Huron offense had 17 baserunners, with Gilbert having the best day at the plate with a double, single, and a hit by pitch to reach base three times. Pedersen walked twice and was hit by pitch.

Wenzel had a double, single, and a walk. Peterson rapped a pair of singles and Ogle had a single and a walk.

Cooper Bischoff and Trace Wenz each had stolen bases for Huron.

Post 7 (1-4) continues play in the tourney through Sunday.
