HURON — The Aberdeen Smittys 13U club took a pair of games from the Huron 13/14U Tigers on Monday afternoon at Klock Field.

In the opener, Aberdeen jumped out with five runs in the first inning and held an 8-1 lead going into the bottom of the third when Huron had its best rally. Joshua Gilbert reached on an error to open the inning, ending up at second base. After a Huron strikeout, Quincey Rashaad sacrificed Gilbert to third.

Jimmie Martin hit a hard ball to the hole behind shortstop for a single that scored Gilbert. Ryker Shelton followed with a single that advanced Martin to third. Shelton then stole second and on the throw to second, Martin scampered home. Shelton was then caught stealing third base to end the inning.

Aberdeen would add a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth for the 12-3 final tally.

Gilbert pitched the entire game on the mound, allowing 12 runs (six earned) over six innings on 14 hits and no walks, striking out four.

Martin had a double, a single, and a stolen base. Parker Bischoff had a pair of singles and walked along with a stolen base.

Colt Culver, Gilbert, and Shelton each had a stolen base.

In the second game, the teams traded blows as Aberdeen scored two in the top of the first, Huron answered with four, the Smittys scored three to take a 5-4 lead, and then Huron answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs to hold a 6-5 lead after two innings.

Aberdeen scored another pair of runs to hold a 7-6 lead entering the bottom of the third. Ernest Wallette walked to open the inning then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by Noah Koops. Koops moved to second on a groundout. Sean Janes was hit by pitch and Gilbert singled to load the bases.

Culver was hit by pitch to drive home a run, giving Huron an 8-7 lead. A fielder’s choice got Janes out and left the bases loaded. Martin then singled to drive home Gilbert and leave the bases loaded. A fielder’s choice ended the inning with Huron up 9-7.

Unfortunately, that was the end of the scoring for the home squad.

Smittys would add a run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to pull out the 11-9 victory.
