Wessington Springs wins Class B boys' title

BROOKINGS — Wessington Springs held on to claim the championship, which was the first in the school’s history during the Class B State Boys’ Golf Tournament on Tuesday at the Brookings Country Club.

After shooting a low round of 237 on Monday, the Spartans turned in a 241 during the final 18 holes of play Tuesday to finish with a 478 total. They finished one stroke ahead of Hanson, which shot a 233 in the final round to secure the second spot.

Hamlin, which was tied for second with Hanson after the opening round, also improved during the second round with a 235, but finished at 481 for third.

Rounding out the top five in the 23-team event, were Ipswich at 494 and Chester at 496.

Miller and De Smet shared spot No. 12 with scores of 511, while Clark/Willow Lake had 516 to share the 15th spot.

Gavin Colson of Sully Buttes, who was tied for second entering the final round, matched his opening round score with a 75 on Tuesday to secure the Class B individual title.

Colson finished two strokes in front of Chet Peterson of Ipswich and Taylor Kriech of Colman-Egan, who shared the second spot.

Blake Larson of Wessington Springs, who held a 1-stroke lead after the first 18 holes of play with a 74, carded an 80 during the final 18 holes to finish at 154. He shared the fourth spot in the final standings with Wyatt Larson of McIntosh.

Derek Brueggeman of Miller, who was tied for second after the first round, finished with an 81 on Tuesday, which placed him in a tie for the sixth spot.

Helping the Spartans claim the Class B championship were Luke Larson and Brock Krueger.

After shooting an 83 on Monday, Luke Larson turned in a 79 on Tuesday to finish at 162, which placed him in a seven-way tie for the 18th spot.

Krueger shot an 80 in the opening round and had an 85 on Tuesday to finish at 165, which put him in a tie for 29th.

Kaiden Weinreis of Doland used a 77 during the final 18 holes of play to work his way to a spot on the all-state team. After a nine-stroke improvement from the opening round he finished at 163, which placed him in a tie for the 25th spot.

Cade Gaikowski led Clark/Willow Lake with a 167 to finish tied for 36th, while teammate Kaden Wookey finished at 170 to claim a share of the 48th spot.

Tom Aughenbaugh finished at 169 for De Smet to share the 44th spot, while Briggs LaBrie of Doland claimed a share of spot No. 48 with a 170.

JD Thompson of Wessington Springs, along with De Smet teammates Danny Sudenga and Max Kees, finished at 171 to finish tied for 52nd.

Oliver Fritzsche of Miller was a stroke back with a 172 to share the 56th spot.

Other area golfers in the tournament were Ethan Bartholow of James Valley Christian at 173 (tied for 60th); Ethan Schmiedt of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket at 177 (tied for 76th); Maverick Clausen of Clark/Willow Lake at 179 (tied for 82nd); Jorryn Heilman of Miller at 183 (tied for 95th); Kadyn Fast of De Smet at 187 (tied for 103rd); and Luke Norden of Miller at 202 (tied for 124th).
