SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Jefferson Cavaliers swept a doubleheader from the Huron Tigers Saturday afternoon in Sioux Falls.
In the opening game, the Cavs jumped out with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and continued to pile on to earn an 11-2 victory.
Tommie Martin opened the game on the mound, pitching 1 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Kolby Hofer completed the game, throwing the next 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out one.
The Tiger offense had nine base runners overall, with Logan Leyendecker leading the way with a single, a pair of walks, and a stolen base. Gabe Waldner had a double and a walk, and Martin had a single and was hit by pitch.
A four-run fifth inning for Jefferson was the difference as the Cavaliers claimed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
Bubba Peterson opened the game on the mound, allowing six runs over 4 2/3 innings on eight hits and a walk. Peterson had one strikeout. Leyendecker threw a perfect 1 1/3 innings to close the game.
Peterson collected three singles. Jack Pederson clubbed a home run and had a walk.
Martin was hit by pitch twice, and Leyendecker had a single and was hit by pitch. Leyendecker added a pair of stolen bases.
Brady Feenstra walked twice for Huron.
The Tigers, now 1-13, were on the road Monday to face Roosevelt for a doubleheader.
Tigers JV splits with Jefferson
HURON – The Huron Tigers junior varsity team pulled out a victory in the first game against the Sioux Falls Jefferson JV team Saturday at Memorial Ballpark, but found themselves on the short end of a high-scoring affair in the second game of the doubleheader.
Colt Culver went the distance on the mound for Huron in the opener, tossing seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and one walk, striking out three.
Chase Schuchhardt reached base twice with a double, a single, and a hit by pitch. Culver had a pair of singles. Parker Bischoff had a single and was hit by pitch.
The Cavalier offense scored in every inning of the second game, and a late Huron rally was not enough, as the Tigers fell 17-7 in the second half of the twin bill.
Zach Scheer opened the game on the mound, going three innings, allowing nine runs on six hits and three walks, striking out two. Tyce Huber was next on the mound, going 1 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on three hits and three walks, striking out one.
Schuchhardt closed out the game, allowing two runs over 2/3 of an inning on one hit and one walk while striking out two.
Seven Huron hitters reached base twice in the offensive showcase. Leadoff hitter Bischoff had a pair of singles, as did Sean Janes.
Huber and Jackson Ford each walked twice, while Schuchhardt, Korbin Brock, and Nolan Stahly each had a single and a walk.
Schuchhardt, Ford, and Bischoff each had a stolen base.
The JV Tigers finish the season with a 7-3 record.
