HURON Proverb Linder of Huron won the chess tournament recently in Pierre and qualified to represent South Dakota in the Barber Tournament for middle school youth this summer.
The tournament will be held July 28-31 in Middleton, Wis.
Linder, who is 12 years old, is in seventh grade and homeschools in Huron. His parents are Rhema and Kara Linder. They moved to Huron in 2019.
Rhema Linder said he began playing chess with his son about six years ago, and says now its rare when he can top his sons skills.
Proverb also increased his skill by playing chess with his grandfather, Lance Calkins of Huron, who is an avid chess player.
Proverb has taken part in many chess tournaments in the state.
In 2023 he represented South Dakota at the Rockefeller tournament for elementary students as a fifth grader.
