HURON After a delay to ensure all who were interested in serving as the District 4 commissioner were able to get their documentation in, the Beadle County Commissioners reviewed the three letters of interest received. In a unanimous vote, they appointed Scott Slepikas to fill the vacant commissioner role.
Slepikas will be sworn in on July 15.
Commissioners opened the meeting with Highway Superintendent Jason Fritzsche. He reported that favorable weather to begin the summer has allowed the department to get a lot of its major projects completed already, so now the crew is focused on gravel maintenance and mowing in the county.
Commissioners then met with representatives from the U.S. Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Services, to discuss the purchase of land surrounding the new office facility under construction near Maga-Ta-Hopi. The 91.67 acres is waterfowl land purchased by Pheasants Forever. This was approved by the commission.
Treatment Court Coordinator Joan Nettinga and a drug court graduate spoke with the commission to explain how the countys opioid funds that were given to the drug court have been used. She invited commissioners to attend the next drug court graduation on Sept. 17.
The next county commission meeting is Tuesday, July 15, at 9 a.m. in the commission room on the second floor of the courthouse. The next meeting will be focused on budget conversations with department heads.
