Post 7 eliminated by Pierre

PIERRE After an exciting win on Wednesday night, the Huron Post 7 season was ended as Pierre Post 8 took two games Thursday at Hyde Stadium in Pierre to earn a berth in the state tournament.

In Wednesdays game to open the three-game play-in series, Huron fell behind 5-0 heading into the top of the fifth, but after scoring two runs in the fifth, the offense exploded in the sixth inning to come away with an 8-6 victory.

Bubba Peterson opened the sixth with an infield single and moved to third on a single by Anderson Porisch and a corresponding error. Porisch moved to second on the error. Peterson would then score on a ground out by Layne Wenzel to make it 6-3.

Brady Feenstra followed with a single to score Porisch and advanced to second on the throw attempt to nab Porisch, making the score 6-4. Tommie Martin was hit by a pitch and Gabe Waldner loaded the bases with an infield single.

After a pitching change by Pierre, Oakley Anderson lifted a double to center field, clearing the bases and giving Huron a 7-6 lead. Anderson would advance to third on a groundout.

After a walk to Logan Leyendecker, Peterson came back to the plate and reached on an error that scored Anderson for the final tally.

Feenstra tossed a complete game, allowing six runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk. He struck out three.

Anderson had a double and a single from the bottom of the lineup, and Feenstra added a pair of singles. Porisch had a single and a walk, while Martin had a single and was hit by a pitch.

Trace Wenz also had a double.

A late rally was too little, too late for Post 7 as Post 8 took the opening game on Thursday, 9-3, to force a decisive game three.

Pierre got off to a big start, using some poor defensive plays by Huron to score three runs in the top of the first, and they built up a 9-0 lead before Huron came to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Huron was able to score three runs before an out was recorded, but Pierre struck out the side to close out the victory.

Peterson opened the game on the mound, allowing six runs over 5 2/3 innings on 12 hits and two walks. He struck out four. Wenzel pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks, striking out one.

Wenz and Porisch each had a pair of singles and a walk. Anderson had a pair of walks and was hit by a pitch.

Peterson walked twice.

After a pair of scoreless innings in the third game, Pierre put up a run in the bottom of the third and four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take control as Pierre righty J.J. Bucholz was on his game, tossing a complete game shutout to give Post 8 a 7-0 win and a trip to the state tournament.

Jack Pedersen opened the game on the mound, allowing five runs over four innings on six hits and three walks. He struck out one. Tommie Martin came in relief, allowing two runs over two innings on four hits.

Huron was only able to muster two hits, and no Post 7 hitter reached base twice.

Post 7 finishes the season 14-24.
