16U finishes season at state tournament

YANKTON The Huron 16U team finished its season as the 12-seed at the state 16U tournament July 25-27 in Yankton, dropping all three games in state play.

On Friday, Huron opened the tournament against No. 4 Tea Titans 16U, falling 11-1 by run rule in the sixth inning.

Sean Janes went the distance on the mound, throwing 5 2/3 innings, allowing 11 runs, three earned, on 12 hits and four walks. He struck out one.

Landon Hulst had a strong game at the plate, collecting three singles. Parker Bischoff had a pair of singles, and Colt Culver added a stolen base.

Hurons second game of the day paired them with second-seeded Watertown, falling 10-2.

Nolan Stahly allowed ten runs over five innings on 11 hits and two walks, striking out three. Bischoff threw two hitless innings of relief, allowing one walk and striking out four.

Hulst, Bischoff, and Josh Gilbert each had a single and a walk. Gilbert added a stolen base, as did Culver.

On Saturday, Huron had a late rally, but it was too little, too late, as No. 5 Pierre claimed a 9-6 victory over Huron.

Carter Porisch started the game on the mound, but he struggled with his control, allowing seven runs on three hits, two walks, and four hit batsmen before leaving after recording just one out. Bischoff came in relief and tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and five walks, striking out three. Culver finished the game with a perfect inning of relief, striking out one.

The Huron offense finished on a strong note, with four hitters picking up multiple hits, led by Janes with a double and a single. Jimmie Martin, Bischoff, and Tyce Huber each had two singles.

Huron finished the season with a 16-18 record.
