Area boys’ basketball teams open postseason play

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 43, St. Mary’s 31
WOONSOCKET –– It wasn’t pretty, but the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks survived a fourth-quarter charge from the St. Mary’s Cardinals before pulling out a 43-31 victory in Region 3B quarterfinal action Tuesday in Woonsocket.

The Blackhawks took a 16-12 lead to half and held a five-point edge in the third, but after pushing the lead out to double-digits, the Blackhawks saw the Cardinals fight back within two until late free throws for SCW set the margin of victory.

The Blackhawks move to 16-5, behind 19 points and 12 rebounds from McCoy Schulz. Landon Jensen added eight points, and Grant Edwards had seven points and nine rebounds.

St. Mary’s finishes the season with a 9-13 record. Trimmer Hanson paced the Cardinals with 12 points.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket will face Ethan, who defeated Chester 62-48, on Friday in Madison to earn a spot in the SoDak 16.

DE SMET –– The No. 2 De Smet Bulldogs jumped out early and never looked back, defeating the Iroquois/Lake Preston Sharks 84-52 in Region 2B boys’ basketball action Tuesday in De Smet.

Grant Wilkinson and Carter Wilkinson led four Bulldogs (17-4) in double-figure scoring with 24 points apiece. Grant added a game-high 11 rebounds as well.

Slayten Wilkinson added 17 points and Noah Luethmers bucketed 15 points for Region 2B top seed De Smet. While he didn’t score in the game, Kolby Sinclair ripped away three steals and dished out eight assists.

The Sharks finish the year with a 9-13 record. Lucas Peskey led ILP with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bulldogs will face Deubrook Area in the Region 2B semifinal at Huron Arena on Friday to earn a trip to the SoDak 16.

HURON — Seventh-seeded James Valley Christian pulled away in the second half for a 73-42 victory against No. 10-seeded Arlington in a Region 2B play-in game on Monday.

The Vikings led 40-30 at the half and outscored Arlington 23-6 in the third quarter to build a 63-36 lead entering the final quarter.

Noah Fast posted a game-high 30 points to lead JVC, which improved to 12-9. Kade Ober had nine points, while Kyler Boomsma had eight points. Gavin Waldner and Jayven Van Scharrel had seven points each.

Miles Antonen had 17 points to lead two players in double figures for Arlington, which ended the season at 2-19. Jake Burns had 10 points, while Paxton Rheault had nine points.

LAKE PRESTON — Eighth-seeded Iroquois/Lake Preston rallied in the fourth quarter to escape with a 51-48 victory against No. 9-seeded Oldham-Ramona-Rutland in a Region 2B play-in game on Monday.

The Sharks trailed 24-22 at the half and 37-35 heading into the final quarter before make the run for the victory during the final eight minutes of play.

Lucas Peskey had a game-high 23 points to lead Iroquois/Lake Preston, which improved to 9-12. Carter Arbeiter and Brycen Blue each had seven points, while Ervin Carter added six points.

Carter and Arbeiter each had nine rebounds for the Sharks. Arbeiter and Ben Curd each had three assists, while Carter had four steals.

Brodie Albertson and Boyd Pooler had 21 and 19 points, respectively, for Oldham-Ramona-Rutland, which ended the season at 5-15.

Waubay-Summit 51, Hitchcock-Tulare 36
WAUBAY –– The Waubay-Summit Mustangs had a halftime lead, but then nearly doubled up the Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots in the second half en route to a 51-36 victory Tuesday in Region 1B quarterfinal play in Waubay.

The Mustangs were led by Jace Wohlleber with 18 points, including five three-point baskets. Hogan Hlavacek added 13 points.

The Patriots finish the year with an 8-13 record. Patrick Maynard led the scoring with 12 points. Deegan Moes and Devin Enander each added nine.

The Mustangs move on to face Leola/Frederick Area on Friday.

WAKPALA — Seventh-seeded Wakpala recorded a 64-44 victory against No. 10-seeded Sunshine Bible Academy in a Region 6B play-in game on Monday.

The Hunkpapa improved to 8-12.
Isaac Hague had 19 points to lead the Crusaders, who ended the season at 1-20. Henrik Wipf had nine points, while Avery Hall and Anders Wipf each had six points.

Hague and Henrik Wipf snagged eight rebounds each for SBA. Mickelson had a team-high four assists.

DE SMET — With three players in double figures, De Smet closed the regular season with a 69-56 victory against Iroquois/Lake Preston on Friday.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 2 in Class B, were led by Grant Wilkinson with 34 points and 12 rebounds. Noah Luethmers and Carter Wilkinson had 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Slayten Wilkinson added nine points.

Slayten Wilkinson had eight assists and four steals.

Lucas Peskey had 24 points to lead Iroquois/Lake Preston, which ended the regular season at 8-12. Ervin Carter had 11 points, while Brycen Blue had 10 points and Carter Arbeiter added eight points.

Peskey and Brycen Blue each had five rebounds for the Sharks. Rexton Blue had six assists.
