School Notes 3/7/26

HMS counseling

The past few weeks in the Huron Middle School counseling office have been full of excitement as we officially began planning our spring events: Tiger Talk and Career Day.

Tiger Talk will take place on the evening of April 9th, 2026, and will be a night filled with food, fun, and educational breakout sessions. Students are asked to bring a parent or role model of their choice and enjoy quality time together.

Career Day will be held on April 29th, 2026, with each grade level enjoying a unique schedule of engaging activities! Sixth graders will attend various business demonstrations from our local community. They will also have the chance to participate in vehicle demonstrations in the middle school parking lot.

Seventh graders will take a trip off campus and attend tours of local businesses, where they’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and reflect on their own future career goals.

Eighth graders will engage in activities focused on developing essential occupational skills. This will help students begin thinking about the employment opportunities available to them in Huron, as well as encourage them to continue considering their goals for high school and beyond.

We are thrilled to watch these exciting events unfold over the next few months!

Second grade

Second grade is buzzing like a well-organized beehive as we step into the final quarter of the school year.

In math, we have just wrapped up our work with 2-digit subtraction. The students worked hard to subtract with confidence and accuracy. Next, we are diving into coins and practicing how to count money. You may hear your child talking about pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters as they become smart little money managers.

In writing, we are crafting procedural paragraphs. Students are learning how to clearly explain how to do something step by step. From how to brush your teeth to how to build the perfect snow fort, they are discovering how important clear directions can be.

During reading time, we continue strengthening our understanding of letters and sounds to support stronger reading skills. We are also focusing on reading smoothly and understanding what is happening in our stories. Our goal is not just to read the words, but to truly understand them.

As we enter the last quarter of second grade, we are talking about the habits and skills students will need to be successful in third grade. Responsibility, effort, and perseverance are at the top of our list.

We look forward to visiting with parents about their child’s progress at conferences at the end of March.
