Four area coaches named 2026 Region Coach of the Year

HURON — Four area basketball coaches were named 2026 Region Coach of the Year by the South Dakota High School Basketball Coaches Association. Huron’s Tim Buddenhagen, who guided the Tigers to a Class AA state championship this season, was the Head Coach of the Year in Region 3 for boys’ basketball. The other three area honorees were in girls’ basketball, with Andrea Begeman of Clark/Willow Lake being honored in Region 1 and Mike Ring of Highmore-Harrold being honored in Region 3. Wade Stobbs of Huron was selected at the Region 1-4 Lower Level Girls’ Coach of the Year. Here is a complete list of honorees:

Boys

Region 1 — Head Coach: Greg Kjellsen of Groton Area; Assistant Coach: William Richter of Britton-Hecla. Region 2 — Head Coach: Pat McClemans of Watertown; Assistant Coach: Travis Wadsworth of Hamlin. Region 3 — Head Coach: Tim Buddenhagen of Huron; Assistant Coach: Jesse Wittler of Sully Buttes. Region 4 — Head Coach: Kyle Courtney of Rapid City Christian; Assistant Coach: Josh Mach of Rapid City Christian. Region 1-4 — Lower Level Coach of the Year: Scott Senftner of Sully Buttes. Region 5 — Head Coach: Dave Hollenbeck of West Central; Assistant Coach: Jared Jansen of Sioux Falls Lincoln. Region 6 — Head Coach: Lance Friesen of Freeman; Assistant Coach: Andy Kleinjan of Harrisburg. Region 7 — Head Coach: Bill Marquardt of Parkston; Assistant Coach: Matt Grave of Parkston. Region 8 — Head Coach: Ryjan Kjerstad of Walls; Assistant Coach: none.

Region 5-8 — Lower Level Coach of the Year: Gary Nebelsick of Elk Point/Jefferson.

Girls

Region 1 — Head Coach: Andrea Begeman of Clark/Willow Lake; Assistant Coach: Rich Dix of Aberdeen Roncalli. Region 2 — Head Coach: Tim Koisti of Hamlin; Assistant Coach: Noah Jewett of Deubrook Area. Region 3 — Head Coach: Mike Ring of Highmore-Harrold; Assistant Coach: Conner Dekker of Sully Buttes and Ryan Melius of Faulkton Area. Region 4 — Head Coach: Jay Wammen of Harding County; Assistant Coach: Ray Ginsbach of Harding County. Region 1-4 — Lower Level Coach of the Year: Wade Stobbs of Huron. Region 5 — Head Coach: Kent Kolsrud of O’Gorman; Assistant Coach: Barry Matthies of O’Gorman. Region 6 — Head Coach: Adam Quail of Lennox; Assistant Coach: Paul McVey of Lennox. Region 7 — Head Coach: Tom Young of Ethan; Assistant Coach: Tera Koupal of Wagner. Region 8 — Head Coach: Shawna Evans of Bennett County; Assistant Coach: Corey Shangreaux of Lakota Tech. Region 5-8 — Lower Level Coach of the Year: Ashley Kier of Wall and Becky Haenfler of Avon.
