HURON –– The Beadle County Commission met as the county board of equalization during Tuesday’s meeting, approving multiple property tax exemptions.
Equalization Director Kim Eichstadt explained that the county received 16 new veteran’s exemption applications. Those exemptions exempt the first $200,000 of owner-occupied property of a permanently disabled veteran.
The commissioners also approved discretionary listings and flooded lands. Eichstadt noted that freeze assessments were not due yet, so those will be addressed at the April 28 meeting. She also mentioned that she has received only one appeal to this point in the county.
Sovanna Beekman, County Human Services Director, brought the active delinquent accounts to the commission. She received permission from the commission to send those accounts to collections.
Commissioners discussed potential fees for video lottery machines within the county after the City of Huron enacted an ordinance to charge $50 per machine to vendors. Businesses within a town would be under the jurisdiction of that town for fees, but businesses in the joint jurisdiction area or on county property would be eligible. Further discussion will take place on this topic.
Auditor Jill Hanson discussed the upcoming election. Sample ballots have not been received yet by her office, and the process to get the ballot approved has been slow-moving, with the combined ballot of city, school, county, and state ballots for the June 2 election. Hanson encouraged Beadle residents to watch the county website, beadlesd.org, or the Voter Information Portal on the Secretary of State’s website, sdsos.gov, to see ballots once they are approved.
The commission will next meet at 9 a.m. on April 28.
