Tigers looking for strong finish at state tournament

RAPID CITY Coming off a fourth-place finish a year ago, the Huron girls tennis team will be looking for another strong finish at the Class A State Tournament, which begins today at Sioux Park and Parkview Courts in Rapid City.

I think we have the potential to do very well at state, Huron coach Rachel Kary said. Weve done great against teams in Class A and the girls are motivated to do well.

The roster for the Tigers includes four seniors, a sophomore and a freshman. Amongst those players are a defending singles state champion and a defending doubles state championship team.

Senior Paw Kler Moo won a state title for Huron at No. 5 singles in 2023. She moved up to No. 4 this season at carries a 14-10 record into the state tournament.

Moo also combined with sophomore Say Glay to win a state title in No. 3 doubles a year ago. The tandem, who occupied the No. 2 doubles spot for the Tigers this season, have went 15-6 this season and will be a strong contender to repeat.

Senior AnneClaire Rubish amassed the most wins for Huron this season in first flight singles. She is 16-6 heading into the state tournament.

Glay was 10-11 this season for the Tigers at No. 2, while senior Ann Hoek, who was fourth last year in the third flight, was 12-11 this season.

Senior Madeline Kleinsasser was fourth for Huron last year in the sixth flight. She put togther a 15-6 record this season in the flight.

Rounding out the singles lineup for the Tigers is freshman Idella Meyer, who went 10-11 this season at No. 6.

Rubish was part of Hurons No. 1 doubles team, which finished third a year ago. She teamed with Hoek this year to go 11-10 entering the state tournament.

While Moo and Glay will be looking to earn their second straight state title in the No. 2 doubles slot for the Tigers, Kleinsasser and Meyer look to finish strong in No. 3 doubles. They have put together a 12-9 record this season.

Sioux Falls Christian is the defending Class A state champion, while St. Thomas More was the runner-up a year ago. Rapid City Christian was third, followed by Huron and Vermillion.

We finished fourthlast year and I am hoping to definitely finish in the top 4 again, Kary said. All of the girls, in both singles and doubles, are in positions to do well at state.

Play is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., both days.
