SPEARFISH — Jean L. Dvorak, 86, of Spearfish, passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2018.
A service of remembrance will be 1 p.m., Saturday, September 8, at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish with inurnment to follow in the Rose Garden in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Jean was born December 31, 1930, in Wishek, N.D. to Carl and Vuriel (Young) Backer. She graduated from Redfield High School in 1948 and attended the Black Hills Teachers College. She was united in marriage to Joseph Dvorak June 11, 1950. They farmed in the Redfield area until 1978.
She graduated from  Northern State College in 1969, and taught six years at Redfield Elementary School. She worked at Huron College from 1978 to 1981, and obtained a master’s Degree through Godard & Universities. The couple moved to Spearfish in 1981, where she was employed as a librarian at Black Hills State University, retiring in 1993.
She belonged to the United Methodist Church and the Northern Hills Quilt Guild, often making baby quilts, “prayer quilts” and charity quilts.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Dvorak of Spearfish; children, Diana (Bill) Hochstetter of Miami, Fla., David (Beatrice) Dvorak of Sioux Falls, and Daniel (Rita) Dvorak of Rapid City; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty (Gordon)  Geuke of Zell, and Joyce Davies of Auburn, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by grandchildren, Jeffery and Ellie Dvorak; and brothers, Bruce and Ralph Backer.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Northern Hills or the Spearfish United Methodist Church.
