Lady Warbirds, Blackhawks to square off for 281 Conference title

HURON and WOLSEY — The semifinal round of the 281 Conference girls’ basketball tournament took place on Tuesday, with consolation games taking place at James Valley Christian and championship games back at Wolsey-Wessington High School.

All games in the final round will take place Thursday at Huron Arena.

Championship semifinals

Wolsey-Wessington 46, James Valley Christian 29
The Wolsey-Wessington Lady Warbirds cruised into Thursday’s championship game of the 281 Conference tournament, breaking open a close game and posting a 46-29 win over the James Valley Christian Lady Vikings Tuesday afternoon, at Wolsey-Wessington High School.

The Lady ‘Birds held a 19-10 lead after the first quarter, but ran away over the second quarter, outscoring JVC 24-7 and putting the game out of reach, allowing both teams to sit their starters in the fourth period.

Leah Williams scored 18 points and hauled down nine rebounds, both game-high totals, pacing the Lady Warbirds to the win. Mya Boomsma added 13 points for Wolsey-Wessington which will carry a record of 7-4 into Thursday evening’s championship game against Sanborn Central/Woonsocket.

The Lady Vikings got 10 points and eight rebounds from Kaylie Robinson, as they fall to 4-5, and will play Wessington Springs for third place Thursday afternoon

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 57 , Wessington Springs 39
The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks blew open a tight game at the half with a furious third-quarter push and coasted past the Wessington Springs Spartans 57-39 to move into Thursday night’s championship game of the girls’ 281 Conference tournament.

The Blackhawks led 22-18 at the half, but outscored Springs 16-11 in the third quarter and 19-10 in the fourth to punch their ticket to the finals.

Liz Boschee came off the Blackhawks’ bench to net a game-high 21 points, while Trista White added 12 points. White, Brooke Doering, Dayton Easton and Teya Moody all were credited with four rebounds for SC/W.

Avery Orth led the Spartans with 15 points, while Harlee Heim had a game-high 10 rebounds for Wessington Springs.

The Spartans, which fall to 4-7 with the loss, will take on James Valley Christian in the third place game Thursday, while Sanborn Central/Woonsocket, now 8-3, will face Wolsey-Wessington for the tournament title.

Consolation semifinals

Hitchcock-Tulare 46, Sunshine Bible Academy 8
The Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots got 18 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and six steals from Katelyn Schroeder as the Lady Pats ran over the Sunshine Bible Academy Crusaders 46-8 in a consolation semifinal of the 281 Conference girls’ tournament at the JVC gymnasium.

Madison Hofer dented double figures for H-T as well, chalking up 11 points.

SBA was led by Betra Amare’s three points, while both Jakki Burma and Aja Paul claimed six rebounds.

SBA will face Iroquois/Doland Thursday morning for seventh place in the tournament, while the Lady Patriots will tangle with Highmore-Harrold for fifth place.

Highmore-Harrold 58, Iroquois/Doland 35
The Highmore-Harrold Pirates rebounded from a tough loss in the opening round of the 281 Conference tournament Monday night, with a solid, 58-35 win over the Iroquois/Doland Lady Chiefs in a consolation semifinal matchup on Tuesday night.

The Pirates stormed out of the gates and held a 12-2 lead after one quarter and made it hold up the rest of the way.

Courtney Moser exploded for 23 points, including seven three pointers, and had seven rebounds to lead the Pirates, while Letha Jessen added 16 points. Grace Knox had eight rebounds to lead Highmore-Harrold, which improves to 6-4 with the win.

Katie Dubro scored 11 points and Rebecca Bich added 10 to pace the Lady Chiefs, who fall to 2-8.

Iroquois/Doland will face Sunshine Bible Academy for seventh place Thursday morning at Huron Arena, while Highmore-Harrold will tangle with Hitchcock-Tulare for fifth place.
