HURON — Lucille Dirks, 93, of Huron, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2018, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
Her body has been cremated and her memorial service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, February 8, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home on Thursday.
Lucille Dougherty was born November 28, 1924, in Carter to Patrick and Orpha (Norwood) Dougherty. She graduated from Winner High School and attended Black Hills College. She taught six years in rural schools before working for 19 years in the Huron School District.
She was united in marriage to Earl Thomas Dirks October 29, 1949. The couple lived in several South Dakota towns before settling in Huron, as Earl worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. After his passing in 1987, she moved to Madison for seven years, returning to Huron in 2007.
She was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Holy Trinity Catholic Parish and the NSCD Club. She is survived by daughters, Kathy Eining, and Carol Ann Dirks both of Huron; four granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Wayne (Judy) Dougherty of Renner, Betty “Suz” Sell, and Mary Lou “Mick” Phillips both of Winner; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; son, Tom; three sisters; granddaughter, Mary Williams; and son-in-law, William Eining.
