Phyllis Miedema, 100, of Huron

HURON — Phyllis Miedema, 100, of Huron, passed away Monday, June 12, 2017, at her residence.
Her memorial service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, June 24, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Broadland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with her family present from 5 to 7 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the Kuhler Funeral Home.
Phyllis Blanch was born December 27, 1916, at Arlington to Warren and Fredora (Kubbernuss) Blanch. The family moved to Sioux Falls and lived there for several years and then moved to Aurelia, Iowa, where Phyllis graduated from high school.
In 1935, she moved to Huron and attended Northwest College of Commerce. After graduation, she was employed at the Huron branch of the Soil Conservation Service until 1938.
On May 26, 1938, she married Edward Miedema, and in 1941, they moved to a farm near Hitchcock where they farmed for 47 years. In 1988, they retired and moved to Huron.
Phyllis was an active volunteer in the Hitchcock community, and she was a president and a member of the Beadle County Extension Club for many years. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and Martha Circle. Phyllis also volunteered for RSVP and the Pyle House, was a member of Rhythm Ramblers, the Huron Senior Citizen’s Center, and Republican Women of Beadle County. Phyllis was an avid gardener, reader, and baker. She loved to spend time with her family, travel, play pinochle with friends, solve crossword puzzles, and paint ceramic dishes and figurines for her family. She is remembered for her strong faith, generosity, and calm manner.
Phyllis is survived by five children, Phil (Carol) Miedema of Sioux Falls, Mary (Jim) Covey of Des Moines, Iowa, Adele (Randy) Jacobson of Huron, Mark (Jan) Miedema of Bath, Maine, and Jean (Nabil) Nour of Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Chris (Trent) Fliginger, Aaron (Michelle) Miedema, Brenda Hein, Carrie Hein, Ryan (Erin) Jacobson, Lee (Amber) Jacobson, Amanda (Bill) Nalls, Jennifer Miedema, Tony (Brenda) Nour, David (Jody) Nour and Michael Nour; and great-grandchildren, Jacob Fliginger, Mearah, Kane, Aubrey, and Kael Miedema, Shawn, Mya, Marti, and Cole Jacobson, Madeline Nalls and Colten Miedema, Brody, Broxton, Ellery, Ivy, Myles, Lucy and Sunny Nour.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Miedema; her parents, Fredora and Warren Blanch; four sisters, Alice Webster, Della Hart, Ruth Haxton, and Florence Sullivan; and three brothers-in-law, Oliver Webster, Chauncey Haxton, and Durwood Sullivan.
