HURON — Raymond E. Maas, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2022, after a brief illness at the Huron Regional Medical Center at the age of 87.
His Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2022, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron. Burial will be held at South Dakota State Veteran’s Cemetery in Sioux Falls on Monday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday morning. Raymond Edward Maas was born June 8, 1935, at Yale to Fred and Clara (Musolf) Maas. He grew up on a farm NE of Yale and attended a country school his first two grades, finishing his schooling in Yale, graduating in 1954.
After graduation Ray farmed with his brother Ralph until entering the Army in September of 1958. Ray served 15 months in Germany and received an honorable discharge. After returning from the Army, Ray continued farming and worked as a carpenter until retiring in 2008. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, the American Legion and the VFW.
Ray enjoyed playing cards with his buddies at the Yale pool hall, hunting with his out-of-state friends, fishing and watching most any sports on TV. His favorite teams were the St. Louis Cardinals, Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings and the Duke Blue Devils. March Madness was one of his favorite sports seasons.
Ray married Fay (Bosma) Gross on Jan. 1, 1989. They shared 16 years together before she passed away in 2005.
He is survived by two stepsons, five step grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife; parents; four brothers, Elroy, Melvin (in infancy), Wilbur and Ralph; and four sisters, Ethel, Esther (in infancy), Viola and Lenora.
