Shaw wins Challenge Cup XVII

Arment takes lead in series standings with runner-up finish

Posted

HURON, S.D. — Don Shaw of Ham Lake, Minn., earned the sweep in the pair of Shaw Trucking Challenge Series events held at Dakota State Fair Speeway with a victory Saturday in the $10,000-to-win Challenge Cup XVII presented by Prostrollo Motors.
It was the second year in a row a driver has won the $5,000 top prize during the Iverson’s Dakota Challenge on Thursday and come back to reach Victory Lane on Saturday at the Huron oval.
“It was an awesome show, and I thank Orville (Chenoweth) for putting up the money he does here. There’s not many guys like that around anymore to help this sport out,” Shaw said. “I’d also like to thank my crew, which is my daughter, Kiana, and her boyfriend Cody Overton.”
Saturday’s victory was the third for Shaw in five events thus far this season on the series. It came in much the same fashion as it had during Thursday’s 40-lap feature race.
After earning starting spots on the front row of the 26-car field via passing points earned during a pair of heat races, Shaw and Kent Arment of Aberdeen, who finished second on Thursday, were positioned to battle it out for the big money.
“I knew he’d be the guy to beat here tonight,” Shaw said of Arment, who is the all-time leader in feature wins at DSFS with 192. “With him starting on the pole I just knew I had to get on the gas right away.”
Shaw snagged the lead on the opening lap, but wasn’t able to build much momentum as the race was slowed three times during the first seven laps of the race. A multi-car pile up accounted for the second of the three caution periods but many of the drivers were able to pull away with minimal damage.
Shaw was finally able to settle into a rhythm following the restart on lap seven and had clear sailing until reaching lapped traffic on lap 10 of a 27-lap caution-free run. The slower traffic allowed Arment to pull up on his bumper and mount a series challenge for the lead.
Arment used the high side of the track to pull even with Shaw as the reached the flag stand on lap 21, but the leader used a good bite coming out of the second turn on the following lap to regain a more solid grasp on the top spot.
“Lapped traffic played into and slowed me up a little bit, but you know, that’s what makes good racing,” Shaw said.  “Kent ran an awesome, clean race, and I knew he’d be there the whole way through.”
After reaching a gap in the lap traffic, Shaw pulled away slightly but wasn’t able to totally shake Arment.
The race would be slowed one final time with eight laps to go as Curt Kranz of Watertown exited turn four a little too high and slammed into the styrofoam blocks positioned along the wall. While the caution period wasn’t exactly what Shaw was looking for, it did provide him an opportunity to put together his approach for the sprint to the finish.
“What it did was let me look at the track a little better at a slower pace rather than at 110 miles per hour,” he said. “I got a better look at it and ran a better groove, and then I kind of took off a little bit.”
With open track in front of him on the restart, Shaw would lead the final eight revolutions to earn the win and bring his total winnings for both shows at DSFS to $15,000.
“Kind of half way through the race I was kind of trying to save some stuff, but towards the end I wasn’t saving nothing,” Shaw said of his final run to Victory Lane. “Orville took awesome care of the track, it never even rubbered down until in turns three and four a little bit, and that was with three or four to go.”

Arment would claim the runner-up spot for a second night in a row at DSFS, while Chad Mahder of Eau Claire, Wis., was third. Rounding out the top five were Lance Matthees of Winona, Minn., and Steve Laursen of Cumberland, Wis.
Using a trio of strong finishes, which included a third-place showing on Friday at Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen, Arment moved to the top of the series standings with 253 points.
Shaw is second in the standings with 241 points. Matthees is third at 235, followed by Laursen at 233 and John Kaanta of Elk Mound, Wis. At 219.
Chad Olsen of Hendricks, Minn., and Chad Becker of Aberdeen won the B-features in the late model division.
Recording late model heat race wins were Aaron Turnbull of Estevan, Saskatchewan; Scott Ward of Watertown; Curt Gelling of Aberdeen; and Laursen.
Also on Saturday, Lane Johnson of Miller earned the second feature win of his career at DSFS in the WISSOTA Midwest modified division.
Johnson led all seven laps of the feature race, which was shortened due to time limitations created by lengthy caution periods.
Camden Myers of Ethan ran second to Johnson and was followed by Brock Hess of Sioux Falls, Adam Brotherton of Huron and Tony Croninger of Watertown.
Jamie Neumiller of Rapid City won the Midwest modified B-main event, with Jayme Peterson of Watertown taking second.
Johnson, Hess, Croninger and Brad Kopecky of Miller won the Midwest modified heat races.
Racing will return to Dakota State Fair Speedway on Saturday with all five regular classes back in action.
