Tigers sweep Yankton in homecoming match

Posted

HURON — The Tigers’ winning streak continues with the team’s fifth victory in a row, as Huron recorded a 3-0 sweep over the Yankton Gazelles on Thursday night during the homecoming volleyball match at Huron Arena.
Set scores for the Tigers were 25-12, 25-15, 25-15, to improve their season record to 9-2, while the Gazelles fell to 1-11 with the loss.
Huron’s Hollee Niehus ruled the court, early in the first set with a pair of kills and back to back aces. A kill was made by Mikenna Moore to open up the scoreboard, while an Alaina Dale kill in the opening minutes of the match added to a strong start for the Tigers.
Yankton took an early time out, at a 7-3 lead for Huron. On return, a Niehus ace plus a Moore kill shot shook the Gazelles, hindering them from gaining points.
The Gazelles suffered a rocky start with a serving error as well as Huron’s competitive techniques, but Maddie Hochstein answered for Yankton with the first kill for the team.

Trying to build momentum, Yankton’s Hailey Gokie hit another kill for the team. However Huron’s multiple errors gave the Gazelles an advantage. The team took their second time out after an ace was made by Huron’s Isabell Ford. Niehus took the Tigers to set point with a kill, as Dale hit it down for another Huron point right away to end the first set at a 25-12 score.
A similar beginning in the second set occurred as Huron tallied up the points, Yankton‘s Gokie was determined as she popped the ball over for a kill, but the Tigers kept coming back with fire.
Throughout the set, Huron maintained mostly a ten point lead on Yankton, but the Gazelle’s brought some kill action by Maddie Hochstein and Jessica Reinhardt. The Tigers hit set point at 24-10, which carried to a 25-15 set score as Huron struggled to close.
Serving errors from both sides of the net were prominent throughout the match, giving points away to one another. However the defensive digs and blocks made by each team were the strong suit of the night.
Yankton took its first lead of the match to open the third and final set, with a block kill by Hochstein, answered by triple threat kills by Niehus for Huron to quickly reclaim back the lead. The score remained steady between the teams in the third, with more errors, but a Kylie Overbay ace got the Tigers roaring again.
An eight-point run for Huron ended the match at 25-15 for the Tigers, who will be back in action on Tuesday at Sioux Falls Washington.
