Harrisburg girls, Aberdeen Central boys win ESD cross country titles

HURON — The Harrisburg Tigers girls’ cross country team ran away with the top spot in the girls race, while the Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles boys were able to edge the Brookings Bobcats in the Eastern South Dakota Conference cross country meet, held Saturday morning at Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron.

Brianna Reilly and Hannah Genrich of Harrisburg finished 1-2 in the girls’ varsity race, breaking the tape more than a minute ahead of the third-place finisher to push Harrisburg to a team title. Harrisburg scored 29 team points, outpacing Brandon Valley who was the clear second-place squad with 48 points.

Pierre came in third at 92 points, Tea Area had 109 to rank fourth, and Aberdeen Central scored 133 to edge out Watertown (137) for fifth place in the team title.

Huron finished ninth with 241 team points.

Seventh-grader Reilly ran a 17:10.36 to win the girls’ varsity race, ahead of eighth-grade teammate Genrich, who ran a 17:13.31. Sarah VanDeBerg of Brandon Valley took third at 18:20.41.

Emery Larson of Pierre ran a 18:24.15 to come in fourth and Addison Scholten of Brandon Valley came in fifth at 18:26.69.

Josie Vlieger was the top Huron runner, finishing in 21:19.32 to come in 42nd.

Aberdeen Central had 51 team points to defeat Brookings, with 59 points, in the boys’ varsity team competition. Brandon Valley finished third at 69.

Yankton led a close group from fourth through sixth, as the Bucks scored 141 team points. Pierre had 155 team points to beat out Harrisburg (158) for fifth place.

Huron finished 10th with a team score of 256 points.

Junior Mikah Peters of Brandon Valley coasted to a victory in 15:32.84 in the boys’ race. Brookings teammates Trevin Lounsbury (15:46.73) and Ernest Ting (15:55.79) finished second and third, with Carson Urlacher close behind for Aberdeen Central, finishing in 15:58.59 for fourth place. Caleb Morris of Pierre rounded out the top five with a time of 16:07.22.

Senior TJ Lien paced the Huron runners, coming in 33rd at 17:43.35. Teagan Lien finished 37th at 17:54.15.

Huron will host the Roger Loecker Invitational Thursday.
