Huron Public Library announces October programs

The Huron Public Library is thrilled to announce several community programs and updates for October 2024.

New Book Drop Locations:
During the ongoing road construction, patrons can take advantage of alternative book drop locations.

Books can now be returned at the customer service desk of Lewis Drug Store or in a designated box near the cash register at Fair City Food Store, conveniently located by the front entrance.

Scarecrow Festival
Get Ready for the annual Scarecrow Festival in Campbell Park!
• Display Setup Day: Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Campbell Park. Interested participants should contact the library to register their displays.
• Festival Dates: Oct. 11 – 14. Bring your family and friends to enjoy a variety of festive scarecrow displays created by local individuals, organizations, and businesses. This family-friendly event is open to all ages. Be sure to vote for your favorite scarecrow display, either at the library or online!
• Special Events on Friday, Oct. 11: The excitement kicks off with a Live Reader’s Theater at 6 p.m. in Campbell Park, featuring performances by local students. Complimentary snacks and apple cider will be provided. The evening will conclude with an outdoor movie screening of “James and the Giant Peach” at 7:15 p.m.

Kids’ Korner (Birth-Grade 3)
The Kids’ Korner will kick off fall with a full schedule of fun activities for kids and families!

The After the Bell Early Release Program will commence this month with various activities for school-aged kids from 1:30 to 3:15 p.m. Registration is required for grades K-3. The Weekly After the Bell Afterschool Program will continue throughout the month on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:15 p.m.. Please call the library for registration and more information.

• Storytime Programs: Join them for Little Explorers at 9:30 a.m. and Little Learners at 10 a.m. on Tuesday mornings, designed for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers. This October, they will have a dramatic play center filled with pumpkins at the Library’s Pumpkin Patch! Enjoy songs, friends, play, and stories with us!

• Kids Club and Dinosaur Club: The Kids Club (third Wednesday) and Dinosaur Club (last Friday) will return to the regular monthly schedule from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

• Fall Celebration: The month will conclude with a Fall Celebration on Oct. 30 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.! Join them for “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown Party,” featuring the movie and games that will excite all Charlie Brown fans!

Tweens / Teens (Grades 4 - 12)
Join the library this October for a variety of fun and engaging activities designed for tweens and teens in grades 4 through 12. Whether you’re interested in crafts, cooking or games, there’s something for everyone!

• Oct. 1 (Tuesday) from 4 to 5:15 p.m., come and craft puffy paint monsters with googly eyes.

• Oct. 4 (Friday) from 5 to 5:45 p.m., enjoy playing Among Us in Real Life where you can complete tasks and try to beat the imposter!

• Oct. 8 (Tuesday) from 4 to 5:15 p.m., decorate your home for Halloween by creating macramé ghosts.

• Oct. 15 (Tuesday) from 4 to 5:15 p.m., you can experiment with a unique marbling technique in the marbleizing paper session.

• Oct. 16 (Wednesday) from 4 to 5 p.m., join them for Fun with Food Pizza, a cooking adventure with Mary and Glenda.

• Oct. 18 (Friday) from 7 to 9 p.m., you can experience a movie on the ceiling with a screening of
“IF” (rated PG), so don’t forget to wear your comfy clothes!

• Oct. 21 (Monday) from 4 to 5 p.m., get ready to create pumpkins that erupt.

• Oct. 22 (Tuesday) from 4 to 5:15 p.m., you can paint or carve pumpkins — just remember to register in advance and choose your pumpkin at the library!

• Oct. 23 (Wednesday) from 4 to 5 p.m., you can create edible Nerf darts, a tasty treat perfect for Nerf Wars. Following that, gear up for Nerf Wars on Oct. 25 (Friday) from 5:30 to 7 p.m.!

• Oct. 28 (Monday) from 4 to 5 p.m., make a motorized coloring machine that crafts a wiggly, spinning robot that colors. Then, join the library for its Halloween Party on Oct. 29 (Tuesday) with a cooking session from 4 to 5 p.m. (registration required), followed by Halloween food, games, and spooky fun from 5 to 6:30 p.m..

Adult Programs
Adults can also look forward to various activities this month:

• Adult Game Night on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. — join them for Trivial Pursuit!

• Coffee Chat on Oct. 4 at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. Kraig Steinhoff, Superintendent of Huron Schools.

• Author Talk with David Fierst on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. Fierst, an attorney from Dayton, Ohio, will discuss his book “Hidden Disgrace,” inspired by his visit to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

• Free Concert! on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. — “Songs & Stories of the American West” featuring award-winning songwriters Kerry Grombacher and Aspen Black.

• Home Delivery: The library provides free home delivery services. If you cannot visit the library, please call 605-353-8530 with any inquiries. Monthly delivery will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 16, starting at 10 a.m.

• Coffee Chat on Oct. 18 at 1:30 p.m. with a representative from the Huron Area Senior Center.

• Bridgerton-themed Craft & Tea event on Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. Registration is required to attend.

Adult Book Clubs
• Mystery Book Club meets on Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss “The Holdout” by Graham Moore.
• Around the World Book Club meets on Oct. 17 at noon to discuss “The Woman in Cabin 10” by Ruth Ware.
• Senior Center Book Club meets on Oct. 18 at 10:15 a.m. to discuss “The First Ladies” by Marie Benedict. This group meets at the Senior Center located at 290 Seventh St SW.

Native American Day
The library will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14, in honor of Native American Day.
