HURON — Laura Smidt, age 90, of Huron, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at Avantara in Huron.
Her funeral service is 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27, at First Baptist Church in Huron, with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation, with her family present, is from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 26, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron.
Laura J. Smidt was born on March 17, 1934 in Plymouth County, Iowa, to parents Earl and Ilo (Coral) Husted. She grew up in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1952.
Laura worked at Ronnie’s Garage, doing many jobs. She also worked at K-Mart for 20 years. In 1980, Laura started volunteering with the Huron Regional Medical Center’s “Pink Ladies” Auxiliary. She retired in 2015 and received an award for volunteering 1500 hours. She was also a 45-year member of the S.D. Extension Center. She belonged to the Oddfellows Lodge and was devoted member of First Baptist Church. She was baptized at First Baptist Church in 1998.
Laura enjoyed crocheting, birdwatching, horses, and cheering on Jeff Gordon in stock car racing. Spending time in the community volunteering was important to her; she also enjoyed spending time with her family.
Laura is survived by her children; Robbin (Myra) Smidt of Huron, Rodney (Deanna) Smidt of Fairbanks, Alaska, Nancy Smidt of Sturgis, and Brian Smidt of Aberdeen; five grandchildren: Chad (Niki) Smidt of Vermillion, Reed (Karen) Smidt of Mendota Heights, Minn., Heather Smidt of Ellendale, N.D., Jeremy (Megan) Smidt of Aberdeen, and Kyle (Kaylee) Smidt of Chelsea; eight great-grandchildren, Tayen and Delaney Smidt of Vermillion, Natalee Smidt and Wyatt Brown of Ellendale, N.D., Ashton Smidt of Mendota Heights, Minn., Lilliana and Emberlee Smidt of Aberdeen, and Kylee Smidt of Chelsea, and two sisters, Earldene Greenfield of Huron and Linda Schamp of Aurora.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Larry Husted and her sister Carol, in infancy.
