Olsen wins season finale at DSFS

Posted

HURON — Chad Olsen of Hendricks, Minn., returned to Victory Lane at Dakota State Fair Speedway on Saturday during the Bauman Agency Harvest of Champions.

Olsen, who last won two years ago, led 24 of the 25 laps to win the Repairablevehicles.com Tri-State Late Model Series feature race and claim the $2,000 top prize.

“The car felt awesome,” said Olsen, who started third, behind Blair Nothdurft of Renner and Corey Zeitner of Omaha, Neb., who are the top two drivers in the Tri-State Late Model Series standings. “With those two guys in the front row, I didn’t think I’d have a chance to go around them, but on that first lap the car felt great.”

Zeitner, who started on the pole, led the opening lap before Olsen ducked under him in the second turn to snag the lead.

While Olsen managed to maintain the top spot for the next 24 revolutions, it wasn’t accomplished easily by any means.

Nothdurft, along with defending Tri-State Late Model Series champion, Cole Searing of Huron applied plenty of pressure throughout the race.

The second of two cautions, which resulted in a pileup of cars on the front straightaway after five laps were completed, provided Northdurft with his first opportunity to try move back in front of Olsen. As the pair battled for the lead, Searing, who started seventh, worked his way to the front and was able to take the second spot for Nothdurft as split a car in lapped traffic.

Searing then set his sights on the leader and was gaining ground until the field was slowed for a third time due to debris on the track with nine laps remaining.

Nothdurft capitalized on the restart and was able to steals the second spot back from Searing, but was unable to catch Olsen, who collected the 22nd win of his career and first since July of 2022 at the Huron oval.

Searing would finish third in the 26-car feature race, followed by Scott Ward of Watertown and Zeitner.

Winning late model heat races were Olsen, Chad Becker of Aberdeen, Zietner and Nothdurft.

David Simpson of Thunder Bay, Ontario, made the trek to Dakota State Fair Speedway on Saturday and came away with the victory in the WISSOTA Midwest modified feature.

Simpson, who started on the outside of the front row in the 15-lap main event, is the current national points leader in the Midwest modified division. He led from start to finish to secure his 20th win in 63 events this season.

“We’re just chasing national points,” Simpson said of his reasoning behind the trek south.

“This a beatiful facility. It’s too bad it only has four races a year,” he told a packed grandstands after the race. “The crew does an awesome job.”

Matt Heinzerling of Spearfish capitalized on the second of two cautions in the race, to move into the second spot lap seven and stayed there the final eight laps. Jayme Peterson of Highmore, who held the second spot for three laps, was third.

Rounding out the top five were Jake Wranek of Sioux Falls and Scott Hansen of Garden City.

Dawson Zabel of Selby and Heinzerling won the Midwest modified heat race.

The WISSOTA modifieds returned to Dakota State Fair Speedway for the first time in two years on Saturday. It provided Dale Ames of Huron to secure his first win of the season at his hometown track.

Ames started on the pole and led for the duration of the 15-lap feature race.

“It’s always awesome to win here,” said Ames, who now has a total sevev career wins at the track.

“I want to dedicate this win to my dad, Larry, as I have with all my wins.

“My whole family is involved with this track and we love this place,” he said.

Mike Stearns of Aberdeen, who is the current national points leader in the WISSOTA modified standings, was second. Dylan Zabel of Selby was third, followed by Chaun Peterson of Aberdeen and Dave Brooker of Tulare.

Ames and Stearns also went 1 and 2 in the lone modified heat race.

Maria Broksieck of Goodwin and Trevor Nelson of Warner continued their winning ways on Saturday at DSFS in the WISSOTA street stock and super stock divisions, respectively.

Broksieck started third in the 14-car street stock feature race and would move to the front of the pack before the end of the opening lap. She led form start to finish in the 12-lap race to earn her second win of the season and fifth of her career at the track.

“We had to replace the right front bearing between the heat race and the feature, so it was kind of nip and tuck to be able to get back on the track,” said Broksieck, who now has 12 wins this season.

Grady Myers of Winner, who started on the pole, held on to finish second. Jayden Bogh of Huron moved up three spots to finish third, while Chris Serr of Aberdeen was fourth and Broc Stout of Winner was fifth.

Broksieck and Stout earned heat wins for the street stocks.

After powering around polesitter, Jeremy North of Huron, during a restart on the sixth lap, Trevor Nelson of Warner cruised his 13th win of the season in the super stock main event.

Nelson, who now owns six career wins at the Huron track, started eighth in the 13-car field and was running third after three laps.

North would drift back into a battle for the runner-up spot with Corey Elward of Mitchell, who started fourth.

Elward would get past North with five laps remaining but the battle remaining intense. So much so that the two drivers were asked to leave the track following as incedent that bround out the final caution with just two laps remaining in the race.

Austin Arbogast of Huron inherited the second spot and would stay there the final two laps. Brad Kopecky of Miller edged Derek Zastrow of Gann Valley for the third spot at the finish line and Shawn Schnabel of Aberdeen was fifth.

Elward and Nelson inked super stock heat wins.
