HURON Saturday afternoon at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, six women were honored by the Huron Area Quilt Guild with Quilts of Valor to recognize their military service.
While the guild has recognized more than 150 recipients in previous programs, members could recall only one or two females that had ever been recognized. This was the first group of quilt recipients that were entirely female.
Tammy Morgan (U.S. Air Force), Sarah Bierman (U.S. Army), Lora Venjohn (U.S. Army), Dr. Michelle Turner (U.S. Army), Susan Schell (U.S. Army), and Sharon Reno (U.S. Army) were recognized. Michelle Pitman (U.S. Army) was not able to be present Saturday but will also receive a quilt.
As an active member of the Huron Area Quilt Guild, Schell said that she had plenty of quilts and was instead given a table runner made by one of the guilds members.
Those recognized each recalled moments from their time of service, whether that was a few years or more than 20 years enlisted. Multiple women explained that there was an expectation to be able to perform combat skills at the same level as male counterparts, but they also credited an upbringing in South Dakota and the hunting that went along with it with giving them skills that some of those same male counterparts did not have.
