HURON For the 21st year, hundreds of the fleet of trucks and their operators will gather in Huron for a celebration of all things 18-wheels.
The Wheel Jam Truck Show, presented by 18-Wheel Promotions and hosted on the S.D. State Fairgrounds is set for June 6-9, according to event founder and promoter Scot Marone.
Were looking forward to another really great weekend this year, Marone said recently. Wheel Jam Truck Show has created some unique events things that we do and nobody else and this year we have some little extras planned as well.
The one big change from Wheel Jam Truck Shows of the past is that there wont be a parade this year. With the construction of Dakota Avenue, we just decided it was going to be very difficult to get those big rigs through that area, Marone said. We will, however, hold a meet and greet on Saturday in front of the grandstand before the brake competition, so folks can come out and get up close to some of the nicest trucks and the top drivers in the world.
Marone said that truck drivers take time out of their busy schedule specifically for the Wheel Jam Truck Show.
The whole thing begins on Thursday night, as Marone hosts participants, sponsors and others connected to the event to a steak fry. He said this is a reunion of sorts, as old Wheel Jam Truck Show friends re-connect and new friendships are formed.
Registration for the weekend takes place beginning at noon and Marone said that trucks will be rolling in for much of the week, in anticipation of the upcoming show.
Registration continues throughout the weekend and Friday night leads up to one of the most anticipated events of the Wheel Jam Truck Show, the Friday Night Rockin Lights competition, with music provided by Big Jim 93.3, beginning at 9 p.m..
To kick off the lights competition, there will be a tribute to country music legend Toby Keith, a great friend to all truckers. We will have a special RIP Toby Keith key chain for all our pre-registrants, Marone said, and two red solo cups. A special toast to Keith will take place to open the lights show.
While the trucks will be rocking, so will Urbandale Lane, as the local band will play a concert at the Earl Nordby 4H Exhibit Hall. Doors open at 8 p.m. with the music cranking up at 9 p.m., for only a $5 charge.
Saturdays activities including the meet-and-greet at the grandstand, will bleed out on to Nevada Avenue on the east side of the fairgrounds for the Worlds Loudest Dynamic Engine Brake Competition an event created by the Wheel Jam Truck Show.
At the start of the competition, Marone said that there will be recognition paid to the first responders the front line of protection, when we need them.
My cousin, firefighter Josh Kogel lost his life, Marone said. Josh was also depending upon who is telling the story either a three-time or maybe five-time Dynamic Engine Brake champion.
Marone said that Kogel claimed five championships But that was Josh, you know. We miss him and want to pay respect to him and to all the first responders for the work that they do.
Saturday night will wrap up with the Drivers Choice Judging Light Show as the tune will be cranking and the lights flashing.
Throughout the weekend, trucks, cars, pickups, trucks, motorcycles and more trucks will make their way to the fairgrounds.
The show wraps up Sunday, as operators put a final polish on their trucks before the Wheel Jam Truck Show judged event.
We had to change things up a bit this year without the parade, Marone said, although we expect to have a great show and a host of activities going on at the fairgrounds. I invite everyone to come out and see these amazing vehicles.
There is no charge for any Wheel Jam Truck Show events and entry into the S.D. State Fairgrounds is free.
