Huron girls win big against Cobblers

RAPID CITY Hylton Heinz dropped in 30, 18 of them from the free throw line as the Huron Tigers picked up a big win, 59-41, over the Rapid City Cobblers in Rapid City Friday.

The Cobblers return just one player who played significant minutes last season, so there were some expected issues working together, and Huron coach Kody Kopfmann chose to utilize the full-court press early and often to force the issue.

The Tigers scored the first seven points of the game on a baseline jumper from Allison Janes, a pair of free throws from Hylton Heinz after she was fouled following a steal, and a three-ball from Janes.

Cobbler 62 junior Chloe Shreve got the home team on the board by stepping back for a three. Huron then forced Central into foul trouble, getting the fifth foul of the period just over halfway through the quarter.

Addyson Knight and Heinz drained a pair of free throws, then top returner Leah Landry made a nifty spin move in the lane for her first bucket to make it 11-5.

Heinz got one of two, missing the first Huron free throw after six makes. Aubree Saenz would nail a three for Central and Olivia Pierce got one of two free throws as the Tigers offense went cold, but Cobbler turnovers allowed Huron to maintain a 12-9 lead after one.

Abby Harrington hit a three to open scoring in the second quarter, but Pierce released after a rebound for an easy layup and Shreve got a putback bucket to bring it within 15-13.

Heinz drove hard for her first field goal and got the and-one foul shot and Aly Davis nailed a three with the shot clock running down to push the Huron lead out to 21-13.

A Heinz free throw would make it 22-13 but then both teams went scoreless for a little over two minutes before Landry took the ball coast-to-coast and bowled over Heinz in the lane. Huron wanted a charge, but Landry made the bucket and got a free throw, which she made to cut it to 22-17.

Huron would then go on a run of free throws to make it 26-17. Shreve would get one of two for Rapid to make it 26-18 heading into half.

The Tigers went down low to Chloe Carr for a bucket to open the third. After Shreve got behind the defense for a basket, Heinz went on a mini run all her own, scoring the next six points, capped by her first three-pointer of the night to make it 34-20.

After a timeout, Harrington made a putback to give Huron its largest lead at 36-20.

The Cobblers would then spread the ball around and use strong shooting outside to go on an 11-2 run before Carr picked up her second basket on a post move to make it 40-31 to end the third period.

Carr opened the fourth with a back cut to get an easy bucket and Janes hit a long jumper to make it 44-31.

Pierce hit a three, but Heinz answered with a three of her own.

Shreve made a strong move to get to a fadeaway jumper, but she banged her knee on someone on the move and never had the same spring the rest of the game.

Carr would get a pair of backdoor cuts to put herself into double figures and a pair of Heinz free throws pushed the lead out to 55-36, Hurons largest lead.

Saenz got a basket and a foul shot and Landry followed with a bucket to make it 55-41. Heinz was fouled by Landry on the ensuing possession, Landrys fifth foul, and she earned a technical foul with her reaction.

Heinz would hit all four free throws, her 25th free throw attempt of the game, and the Tigers would secure a 59-41 victory.

Huron moves to 3-1 behind 30 points for Heinz and 10 points for Carr.

Shreve scored 14 to lead the Cobblers (0-3). Landry added 10.

The Tigers junior varsity team edged the Cobblers, 45-44.
