HHS Speech & Debate teams place in tourney

The Huron Speech & Debate Team traveled to the Donut Roberts Invitational Tournament in Watertown on Jan. 24-25.

The tournament is named after Donus D. Roberts, a Watertown coaching legend in the national speech and debate world. The National Tournament Awards Ceremony is named after him.

Were a small team this year, rebuilding after graduating a big group last year, said head coach Mitch Gaffer. Were working to get develop a new group of students to move up and take their place. Were pleased with the progress but still have a way to go.

In Informative Speaking, Gracie Warren placed third and Natalie Kinsley placed fifth.

In Student Congress, Lily Halter served as Presiding Officer.

We had a really good showing in Informative, Gaffer said. Both Gracie and Natalie have worked hard writing their speeches and making their visual aids. It was nice to see that hard work pay off in Watertown.

Weve been struggling through this middle part of the season, Gaffer added. Switching to new interp pieces and writing new debate cases is coming along slowly but were making progress. Well be working hard as we enter this last phase of the season.

The next tournaments for the team will be SF Jefferson on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 and SF Roosevelt on Feb. 7-8.
