Monday, May 26, is Memorial Day. Many communities around the Heartland Area host a program to honor fallen soldiers. Feel free to attend one or many of the following programs, listed alphabetically by town.
Alpena
Erv Huber will be the guest speaker at the Owen Kunze Alpena American Legion Post 116 Memorial Day program on Monday at 4 p.m. at the Alpena Community Center.
Music will be provided by Leo Jensen and Dylan and Tabitha Unruh. The Wolsey American Legion Post 59 will be assisting with the service.
A light lunch will be provided with a freewill offering.
Highmore
The Highmore American Legion is hosting a Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Hyde County Memorial Auditorium. A potluck lunch will follow, sponsored by the Highmore Legion Auxiliary.
Hitchcock
The Hitchcock American Legion and Auxiliary are hosting a Memorial Day program at the Altoona Cemetery at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at the American Legion Hall following the program.
Huron
The Huron Memorial Day program, hosted by Legion Post 7, is on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Huron High School auditorium. Retired Lt. Col. Deb Gilbertson is the guest speaker, with music provided by James Valley High School.
Iroquois
The Bensley-Round American Legion Post 280 of Iroquois will be hosting a Memorial Day Program at the Iroquois School south gym at 10:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be CW2 Louis Du Randt, Kingsbury County Veterans Service Officer.
Also speaking will be the senior and eighth-grade Good Citizenship recipients Chenoa Harris, Andrew Gednalske, Madelyn Cundy, and Connor Dant. Diane Perry will be providing music.
A meal will follow at the Iroquois American Legion Hall with freewill donations. The public is encouraged to attend. Virgil
The Virgil American Legion Post 268 is hosting a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. at the Post home. Guest speaker is Terry Wallace. A short service at the cemetery and lunch will follow the program.
Wolsey
The Hershman-Gordon American Legion Post No. 59 Memorial Day program will be at the Wolsey Community Hall on Monday at 10 a.m. A potluck lunch will follow. Ron Volesky is the guest speaker for the program.
