Tigers stun top-ranked Pierre

HURON After playing with the lead for most of the game, the Huron Tigers used a late touchdown on the defensive side of the ball to snag the lead and held on for a 13-7 victory against No. 1-ranked Pierre on Friday at Tiger Stadium.

Kudos to our defense, they bent but didnt break, Huron coach Dru Strand said. They believed coming into the game that they were going to win.

The Tigers put the first points on the board with 7:41 remaining in the opening quarter.

Anderson Porisch connected with Mason Jurgens for a 7-yard touchdown to put Huron out front. Mister Min added the extra point to make it 7-0.

A key part of the scoring drive was a fourth-down pass from Anderson Porisch to his brother Carter Porisch to extend the drive.

It appeared that Pierre would use the ensuing possession to march down the field and put its first points on the board.

The Governors advanced to with 10-yards of the end zone, but had their hopes dashed with a fumble recovery by the Tigers.

Pierre would have another scoring opportunity before the end of the opening, but a missed field goal left a goose egg on the board for the visitors heading into the second half.

The Governors used the opening possession of the second half to methodically move the ball down the field with its running game. They used a 1-yard run by senior quarterback Kale Lounsbury to score a touchdown with 6:23 remaining in the third quarter.

The two teams traded turnovers on downs to end the third quarter.

Ayden Behm intercepted a pass to stall Hurons opening drive in the fourth quarter, but Pierre was unable to capitalize, as an incomplete pass on fourth down ended the ensuing drive at the Huron 32-yard line.

Behm came up with his second interception just a play later to regain possession for the Governors, but that didnt last long.

Huron defensive back Jeremy Hofer returned the favor with an interception and scampered 54 yards for a touchdown to put the Tigers back in front.

A missed extra point left Huron holding a 13-7 lead with 1:01 to play.

Pierre would move the ball down to Hurons 14-yard line, but a pair of incomplete passes allowed the Tigers to record the upset.

Our defense came out and made a lot of tackles in space, Strand said. They did a fantastic job. We had a lot of guys flying around on defense.

Landon Hulst led the rushing attack for Huron with seven carries for 44 yards. Anderson Porisch had nine carries for 31 yards and was 10 of 22 passing for 113 yards.

Oakley Anderson had 11 tackles and three assists for the Tigers, while Hulst had nine tackles and two assists and Riley Winegar had eight tackles and an assist.

Lounsbury finished with 59 yards on nine carries for Pierre and was 17 of 28 passing for 149 yards.

Huron, which is now 1-1, will travel to play Tea Area at 6 p.m. Friday.

Pierre, which is also 1-1, travels to play Watertown on Friday.
