HURON –– The Beadle County Commission on Tuesday approved the hire of Teri Zwieg as the weed board supervisor. Details on benefits will still need to be finalized, but the hire was approved to allow Zwieg to begin preparing for summer weed management.
The commission also approved the hire of a jailer and a seasonal worker in the highway department. Commissioners also approved the resignation of the Veteran Service Officer/Deputy Emergency Management Director.
Highway superintendent Jason Fritzsche led off the meeting. He presented the bid for microsurfacing work to be done. Three bids were received, with the lowest that met specifications awarded to ASTECH Corp. with a bid of $232,759.45, which was more than $24,000 under budget.
The contract for the surfacing project this year with Asphalt Paving was signed by the commission, as was a utilities certificate for bridge work in the county.
Fritzsche reported that none of the four bridge grants that were prepared and sent to the state were awarded to be repaired.
New mowers were purchased, and the discussion of increased cost for tractor rental led into discussion of a second tractor purchase, but no action was taken.
A conditional use permit was approved to move a mobile home onto a property in Beadle County.
Rosters for the dive team and certified storm spotters were approved.
The commission discussed the custodial job description and made changes before listing the position.
The public meeting ended, and the commission met in executive session to discuss personnel.
