Iroquois FCCLA members Brianna and Kolee have been hard at work on their Focus on Children STAR Event project, combining creativity, leadership, and service to support younger students in their school community. As part of their project, they enlisted the help of their classmates to teach Iroquois preschool students how to play Crazy 8’s, creating a fun and engaging learning experience for everyone involved. To further support the preschoolers, the pair also upcycled old CDs into handmade card holders, making it easier for the young students to hold and play their cards.
STAR Events, which stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition, are competitive events through Family, Career and Community Leaders of America where members apply skills learned in Family and Consumer Sciences courses to real-world projects. Students compete at regional, state, and national levels and are recognized for their leadership, project development, and career readiness.
The Focus on Children event specifically challenges participants to plan and carry out a child development project that positively impacts children and the community. Projects like Brianna and Kolee’s emphasize hands-on learning, creativity, and meaningful interaction with younger age groups.
With their project implementation complete, the girls are now preparing their final presentation and display as they get ready to compete at the State Leadership Conference in Sioux Falls on April 26–28. Their hard work and dedication highlight the positive impact FCCLA members continue to make within their school and community.
